Excellent review. Did the author relinquish his U.S. citizenship to live in Thailand permanently? Does the book discuss the details regarding this subject? I've researched the matter a little, and it seems quite complicated, leading me to the conclusion that it isn't practical unless you have a lot of money.

Thanks for your comments. It's been awhile since I read the book, but I don't recall a lot of detail about the question of citizenship. The author relates his general experience and impressions of Thailand, but there isn't a lot of technical information about the complications of moving to another country.

I live in Thailand and I have to agree with the other person on here who says they would find reading this book irritating. For me that is because you form such different opinions of cultural things depending on your experiences that it is annoying to hear someone describe it in a way that feels completely wrong. For instance that statement about eating bugs...many Thai people find that just as disgusting as Americans.
Also, to answer Kappy's question, you do not have to give up US citizenship to live in Thailand. All the paperwork is a hassle, but Thailand is an amazing place to live.

Wow, Parashu! I loved your review and I absolutely rate your review a billboard-sized 4 out of 4 stars. It's quite entertaining and something I almost want to bookmark to read in the future again. Man, now you've got me envisioning what it might be like to live in Thailand. I wouldn't mind reading this book. Hey, there's an interesting word you used in your review. Treed. Pretty sure this is the longest review I've read on this site, and it was splendid! I love the premise. I've always thought it was ironic when Americans move abroad. It's certainly understandable, but at the same time doesn't make sense since this is the "land of opportunity" as you pointed out. The personal nature of the work does sound appealing.
