I think both men and women can be incredible writers. However, I tend to find myself reading more books written by women.

I'd be interested in statistics about how many action/thriller authors are actually women masquerading under pen names because they don't think anyone would pick up their books if they knew it was written by a woman, and vice versa with men and romance novels!

I'll go with the opposite of whoever wrote the title of this thread.

This question is ridiculous. There are men who write incredibly well and some who are terrible. There are women who write incredibly well and some who are terrible. Gender has nothing to do with writing ability.

It really depends on what you mean by this. True, there are certain (statistical) idiosyncrasies when it comes to the writing style, approach, norms, themes, etc., but they will remain silent unless the question asked here looses its vague character.

Oooo...nothing like a loaded question of the sexes to get the blood flowing! I feel like it is a matter of personal talent and perception vs. whether male or female. ....

Neither! It all depends on the person!

I find the topic question--offensive as an author.

The title we hold as creative writers is--author.....PERIOD!

The ability to create word pictures and ideas using words has absolutely NOTHING to do with physical sexual equipment; if you risk going the next step and declare there is a MENTAL difference between men and women, then yo risk opening a very well guarded door and the furies WILL attack! :D

I think that the authors-men are much better , they write more productive .. in "female" works there is too much "love"

Practical action books and romantic books all have their place in literature and entertainment. In fact naturally, it should have been a man and a woman uniting to write a book just like they unite to produce a child or train him/her. Men and women are complimentary not competing, at least that's the way I see it. So each part will bring their own side to the table. However, writing is a personal thing and we have to admit we read whatever is good from both sides. At least I know my favorite books of all times, without any clear favorite, are Flowers in the Attic and Pillars of the Earth.

Interesting topic...however, I feel like it's mostly a personal preference. For me, I am typically more drawn to male authors when reading in my favorite genre (crime thrillers). Not that women can't write thrillers as well, I just tend to be more interested in the plots of books by men. I will say though, every book that I have completely fallen in love with, was written by a woman.

I think its a mix and depends on the genre. Male authors are great at serial plots, but women tend to add a lot more color and feeling to the story.

Honestly, I think it all depends on the subject. Each sex will come at a subject from a different point of view.

This is a tough question to answer. I believe that both men and women have the potential to equally be the best writer that they can be. I think it would have to do with their writing genres, styles and overall experiences. From the last few books I have read in the last 2 months I feel that women are better at emotions. We (women) are more open to emotions and are able to really describe them differently then men. Men though are great at describing different elements within their writing. Both men and women have their advantages and disadvantages when it comes to writing to I don't think ONE sex is better than the other.

People who believe that one gender writes better than another simply haven't read enough books.
