Devil Bones by Kathy Reichs

Post by Dragonlady1 »

This is an amazing and suspense filled story of murder and mayhem centered around a house in North Carolina recently under renovation. When a plumber stumbles upon a forgotten seller that contains animal and human remains, including a teenage girls skull, cauldrons and religious artifacts all arranged in a gruesome display police began a forensic investigation but fight an unrelenting media who seek answers. When another young body is found panic over satanism and devil worship has the citizens on a witch hunt led by an evangelical politician. Nothing about the murders is really clear for investigator Brandon but as she digs deeper into the evidence from the gruesome seller she will unearth the truth that is darker and more frightening than she ever imagined. The story is based off of the TV hit series Bones.

The show is actually based off of the books. The characters in the novels are so much more full and real than the characters on the show. Plus the science in the novels is more accurate than that on the television show (I'm a geek for the science part, as I have a degree in the field haha). Have you read any of her other Brennan novels? They are pretty spectacular!!

I do not like the show though I have enjoyed her writing. The characters are disturbingly flat in the show.

Here is my review :)

In the book Devil Bones by Kathy Reichs (International best selling author, forensic anthropologist, and producer of the fox television hit “bones”) we find Kathy returning to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she finds a very twisted murder plot. It has a mix of Sanateria or devil worship. The first victim found when a plumber is trying to fix an old home and ends up an a basement no one knew about and finds a very disturbing sight. A beheaded chicken, animal bones, cauldrons containing many different things from animal feathers and other religious relics. In the center of it all a shrine where there is a skull of a teenage girl. In the mean time at the lake a man is walking his dog and finds a headless body of a teenage boy. Everything is a mystery, when these murders happened to where it happened. A preacher turned politician is convinced that these deaths were done by witches and goes out a witch hunt convinced on getting revenge.

I would recommend this book to adults. It wasn’t a bad book but not my norm. I only picked up this book to complete my reading challenge this one was to complete a book turned into a tv show.

This book is the eleventh in the series. I did not know when picking this up. I did not feel lost though probably because she did a lot of playing catch up so any reader could do as I did and start with this book. Smart on the authors part. Annoying probably for devoted fans who have been following this books and already know the details and just want to find out what is next in the series, not what happened in the books they already read.

At the end of the day this book wasn’t very interesting to me. It has me intrigued enough though to try the tv show. Who knows maybe tv series are better then the books. It was also kind of cheesy. Every chapter ending very weird like if only I had paid attention maybe there would have been less pain, and end to a beginning. All very weird. Even though I did not enjoy this book very much it is a quick read and not very long. If you tried you could probably finish it in a day. Who knows you may enjoy it more then I did.

I rate this book a 2 out of 4 stars.
