Strangely it depends on the book I'm reading. Haven't figured out what sets it off yet :p
My head also moves side to side :p

I do move my mouth when I read, but that's only when there's background noise and I need to focus. Otherwise, I either read aloud or silently.

I actually HATE it when people read aloud.. It actually got to the point where I walked up to a teacher while she was setting up a cassette tape for our 10TH GRADE English class (come on people, if you're in high school you don't need someone to read to you!) and asked to be excused to the hallway so I could read in peace. I think the fact that I finished the book by the end of the period while all the other students still had a good 40 pages left to go convinced the teacher that she should allow me to sit out in the hallway and do my own thing.

That being said, if there's a part of the book that's written awkwardly I will mouth it out to see where the emphasis should go, which usually makes it easier to understand. Rather than speaking aloud, I have a bad habit of stretching my neck and putting my nose so far into the book that it takes me going cross-eyed to realize how close I am! :?

Usually not, but rarely I'll read a confusing sentence. I'll mumble through it aloud when rereading.

When I read I'm the stone figure. I don't open my mouth, gasp, exclaim, say "Huh" or otherwise react. I move as little as possible. Habit I honed in school, going incognito so nobody would bother me or interrupt my reading.

Also did this when I was working writing news copy for a major daily. Interviewing or just attending a meeting and speech as a reporter means that you cannot reveal your feelings in any way, appear totally neutral.

So no. I don't move at all, little as necessary. Breathe and blink and turn pages. That's it. As a result I'm a very fast reader with high comprehension and retention. Total focus.

I don't whisper or move my mouth when I read but I do speak out loud when I am writing because it helps me hear how something will read; it's also kind of like me sharing ideas with someone else.

It depends for me. If there is distracting background noise, mouthing the words as I read helps me to focus better. If it's silent, then I just read in my head.

If I'm revising and tweaking a certain scene in my novels, I'll often read the portion out loud, even if it's just to myself. Hearing the speech patterns of the characters helps me make the dialogue more realistic.

But I never, ever read aloud when I'm just reading a book. Slows me down to much, makes my mouth dry.

Thinking back, I seem to remember being coached when in primary school to read to myself silently. Naturally, in a class of 25 kids, we had our "quiet time" when we were supposed to read or draw pictures or whatever at our desks, and we were never allowed to read to ourselves aloud.

I am certain that the quiet time was a way for our teachers to get a break, too.

I also am pretty sure my Dad cautioned me to not read aloud to myself. He said that the entire event on the page should go directly into the brain.

This is 100% true for me as well. If I'm writing something for a story or game, I'll totally either mouth it or even softly speak it to hear how it flows, especially for poetry. But for just reading something, I'm a rather quick reader and mouthing it would make me go sooooooo much slower!

No, I don't move my mouth when I read or mumble or whisper anything. The most that happens when I read is that I make funny facial expressions and laugh and or comment on what I just read. I feel like people find it weird when I read because I'll be quietly reading and all of the sudden I bust out laughing and can't stop. I've gotten weird looks and that just makes me laugh harder.

I do this too, laughing aloud. I also will exclaim "Wow!" out loud if I read a particularly smart piece of dialogue or narrative.
