Chocolate is a delicious dessert many crave. However, chocolate is not recommended to be consumed by all living organisms such as dogs. That does not stop the little puppy of this story from yearning for the touch and taste of chocolate in his panting mouth.

Floppy is a quirky brown puppy introduced in the book, Floppy’s Daydream, by Djalal Tebib. Floppy is loved by Melly and her parents and lives in their home. He is a spunky puppy who has an unusual liking for chocolate and a big distaste for milk. On a summer day, a shopping trip is proposed by Melly to Floppy. Floppy loves shopping and becomes excited and thinks of finding chocolate while on this shopping trip. Floppy, Melly, and Melly’s mother all arrive at the supermarket. While Melly becomes distracted by the dolls in the supermarket and Melly’s mother begins in a friendly conversation with another, Floppy finds himself in a predicament. This predicament has Floppy running and screaming throughout the store, trying to avoid an interaction with a plastic water gun. This chase leads Floppy to the chocolate section of the store. Will Floppy finally be able to fulfill his long awaited craving for some chocolate?

Floppy’s cuteness, spunk, and desire for some chocolate makes him a character children can relate to and will want to know what adventures he goes on next. When Floppy finds himself in the predicament during the shopping trip in the supermarket, his actions during the chase generate multiple emotions for Floppy ranging from scared to sleepy to happy when he sees the section of the store containing his favorite thing; chocolate. The chase seems to be worth the hassle once Floppy encounters the chocolate and becomes happy again.

Throughout the story, I could not help but to be reminded of the differences in the language used in the book. Although English is the primary language of the book, some sections do not seem to flow so smoothly. My recommendation is to revise the book to ensure the English being used flows more smoothly. During the time when Floppy is rejoicing about the chocolate in the supermarket, the song he sings is also of a different language. I can only assume the lyrics of his song are referencing chocolate in a positive light. Possibly adding a translated version of Floppy’s song to the book will make the song more relevant to this part of the story.

Overall, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. There is room for improvement with the flowing of the language used in this book. Floppy is a cute character many children will enjoy reading.

The only problem (is it really a problem?) is the kids will want to eat chocolate after they read the book. :)
