Jim Butcher: Dresden Files Series

With Each new novel that Butcher writes, I sit in suspense. Some Authors tend to become predictable. Butcher surprises me each time and also makes me wonder about the other characters that surround his adventures. I would like to discuss the major themes that anyone had read in the novels and wanted to discuss. And also to discuss certain events in the novels that many have questioned. I pray that he hurries with the next book because that cannot be the last!!

I just finished the first book, Storm Front, and loved it! Now to work through the rest. We also found the series on Netflix last night and started it. I am sad to see that it had such a limited run.

I have only recently seen the actual TV series and I liked it. Even though they didn't follow the order of the books. I feel that if it was a continual film, it would have been better, What do you guys think? Harry Dresden Films. If produced well, I would gladly put them along aside the shelf with my Star Trek and Star Wars Discs.

My wife and two oldest sons and I are all completely addicted to the Dresden Files series. A friend recommended it to us, and every novel in the series just seems to get better (which is high praise, because the 1st novel was good enough on its own . We've read many of the books multiple times in different formats: eBook, audiobook, and good old paper (hardcover and paperback) for various installments. I'd highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys dark fantasy with memorable characters, non-stop action, a touch of humor, and plenty of inventive supernatural elements.

Loved the TV series! I read one of the books - out of sequence, #6 I think - and wasn't all that taken with it. Haven't gotten around to trying any of the other books.

Dude, start the series with the #1 book and keep reading. The first 2-3 books are okayish but from #4 the events take an epic turn for the dark and serious fantasy. You'll be hooked in no time, believe me.

Also, did anyone else also feel that Skin Game was not THAT good , seemed like a buildup to the storm that's going to come. Hope Peace Talk will have more epic revelations and lots of Molly Carpenter.

Overall, I'm a big fan of the series. I had seen a few episodes of the TV series and enjoyed it, so I downloaded the first four books onto my Kindle as some vacation reading a couple years ago. Needless to say, I got one heck of a sunburn because I spent the whole vacation poolside reading one book right after the next. I even went so far as to download the rest mid-vacation to finish the series.

I will go along with the statement that the series takes a major turn from the original premise of a street-level wizard investigating crimes. Honestly, with a vampire feud, fairies, and long lost family, sometimes it can be a little overwhelming. However, like any series, there's some high points as well as low. I think my favorite out of the series so far would probably have to be Proven Guilty, as it starts a new era in the Dresden world with the formal introduction of Molly Carpenter.

Oh, and to reply to master_little:

I agree with you on that one. Although, Butter's new role seems like an epic storm worth building up to by itself.

Hmm.. not a big fan of Butters up to now, but maybe it all changes now. Though I have one complaint and that is, though there seem to be a lot of deaths, hardly any is permanent. I would love a life changing event like in 'Changes' which just makes the world go topsy turvy, especially Harry's life and with Skin game showing that Harry is gonna live with his daughter now it may just be possible.

I agree that Butters felt kind of like the Jar-Jar Binks of Dresden's world, just thrown in for the occasional comic relief, but life after Skin Game will definitely see a change in his role and, possibly, his character as well. And you're absolutely right about death not being permanent. Apparently in this world, you die, you get mourned, you come back as a ghost for a little bit, and then you're miraculously returned to life, albeit with a price. But it's interesting to note what effect that has on other characters around them, such as Harry's effect on Molly.

As for the best character in the series, I think I'd have to go with either Harry, even though he does seem to gain more power in each book almost to the point of being unrelatable, or Ramirez. He seems like the most relatable of the Wardens, and I appreciate his sense of humor. But that's only if you're looking at human characters. If you expand it further, I'd definitely have to vote Mouse. How can you not love a mountainous, mystical foo dog?

Haha yes.. Mouse is super awesome, specially when he is being a slobbering regular guardian. I think a little more romance or a complicated relationship with Molly would make the series interesting. Not a big fan of Harry-Murphy. Though Murphy has done nothing but still.....

I think it would be interesting to introduce another apprentice for Dresden and to see if it mirrors the relationship he had with Elaine when they were with Justin DuMorne. That time together definitely created a bond between him and Elaine, and I wonder how he'd react to seeing Molly beginning a similar relationship considering how his time with Elaine ended.

As for Harry and Murphy, I'm with you on that one. Even though the series seemed to push that relationship since the beginning, I'm not sure I could ever really picture those two together. Besides, if you did a power couple name (i.e. Brangelina) they'd end up as Dresdurphy, and that's just sad.

Yeah, it doesn't have the same spark that Harry-Susan relationship. My word, that one was like embers laid out on coal, smouldering hot.
As for an apprentice, I don't see Butcher giving a new apprentice to Harry with him being Mab's bitch and all. HArry would not like to give MAb another pawn to play with considering how she manipulated him into training Molly as The Winter Lady. Though I think some of Winter;s baser instincts are gonna come to the fore with Harry and Molly both Winter;s creatures now.
