A Case of the Nasties
By David Rowell Workman

A Case of the Nasties is a fiction novel written by David Rowell Workman. It takes place on the streets of Hollywood in 1955 and begins with private detective Jimmy Egan getting a visit from his old army buddy, Eddie Wood, who claims that someone is trying to kill him. A mysterious intruder broke into Eds house and left a note saying that he’s got one week to live. Ed has no idea of who would want to kill him but there is no crime scene without a clue. Jimmy gets to work and soon he’s got a lead which will lead him to the people responsible.

As Jimmy finds clues and investigates further into the case an acquaintance, who also happens to be a known criminal, tells him to leave it alone and tries to stab him. This doesn’t scare Jimmy off though and as he dives deeper he uncovers who is responsible for the threats and what they want to do to Eddie. Unfortunately they got to Eddie before he did and they’re now holding him captive and are soon going to kill him. Jimmy has to be quick if he wants to save Eddie and it’s going to be dangerous. Can he do it?

David Rowell Workman is an author who’s published books mostly in the crime genre (The Killer was a Cross Dresser, Life of a French Fry, The Taurus Fall - a one-act drama) but also some thrillers such as A Tub of Spiders.

I enjoyed reading this book but it’s not the best book I’ve ever read. It has some faulty grammar here and there although it’s not so much as to ruin the book, it’s just distracting. However, the storyline is really good, it has excitement and suspense and it is not, like many books, boring. It moves at a good pace and time between events is short, there is always something happening and the reader never looses interest.

It is, in my opinion, a fairly good book. It is what one would call a classic detective story, albeit not an exceptionally good one. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars but it is a low 3. It gets three because there is nothing devastatingly wrong with it, it is a good book, but it is not extraordinary and therefore does not get a 4.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good detective story. It’s a good book and the language is not too hard. It is also quite short, just 150 pages, and so even younger or inexperienced readers will probably enjoy it.

My rating might be biased towards a higher score because I read a truly horrendous book just before this one compared to which this was a book of awesome sent from heaven. The book in question was Hallonbåtsflyktingen (Raspberry Boat Refugee) and I do not recommend it to anyone.
