I read the thriller Night Film by Marisha Pessl sometime back and I thought it was wonderful. Pessl's prose is absolutely beautiful and I found the characters to be realistic and engrossing. But some of the online reviews are not so favorable. So, I was just wondering... what do other readers think of the book?
It started out with promise, but I found it disappointing overall. The story's characters (both their actions and motivations) strayed too far from reality for me to stay 'inside the story'. Around the halfway mark, I started skimming. In the end, I didn't think the payoff matched the buildup.
I checked this thread because I keep coming across this title, and have picked it up at the local library more than once, only to put it down again. It seems to be the kind of book that ought to interest me, but for some reason does not. And the mixed reviews here suggest that it may wait awhile longer for my attention ...
Latest Review: "A Vision of Angels" by Timothy Jay Smith
I really loved the first three quarters of this book, but the last bit dragged A LOT for me. I mostly listened to this on audio and had no idea when I got it that it was over 600 pages. I loved the way the opening of this book was done and it legitimately creeped me out. I think the worst part overall for me is every time I thought the mystery was finally solved, the story just kept going. It kind of felt like it was just never going to end and it left me waiting for it to just finally be over, no matter what the conclusion. When we finally got to the end, it was just kind of blah for me. But like I said, the first three quarters of the book were great. It's been a long time since a book left me nervously looking around to make sure I'm really alone, and Night Film had me doing that at several times. I'll definitely check out other books by this author in the future.
