The cold is getting very boring now, cant have a shower as the pipes are frozen, the car takes half an hour to defrost and the heating is on day and night, we Irish arent built for this cold so roads and services pretty much close down in heavy snow, im praying this Arctic spell passes soon and doesnt come back in January.

Was chatting to a Polish waitress today and she said that they get minus 30 degrees over there but nothing stops- shops and schools and roads are all as normal but thats obviously because the country is designed around the cold. Swing, i notice you are from Poland i guess this complaining about minus 10 weather is amusing ha

-30? She overexaggerated a bit. That's a rare situation. But up to (or rather down to) -20 is more common and I wouldn't say everything works perfectly well. We have terrible troubles with trains not coming on time and the transport generally is slower. But besides that, true, everything's open and working. But that doesn't mean -10 is like nothing to us. Just go out in the street and you'll find yourself around angry freezing zombies :P You'd think it should be normal to us, but I cannot get used to low temperatures, even if it's happening every year

So, no worries, you're not the only one complainig about winter.

Ah i see thanks for reply! I think she was just a bit surprised at how many things over here close when we get unexpected snow and freezing weather, as in most schools close, pipes get frozen out of use and shops close. But the way things are heading Ireland is going to have to get very used to these freezing winters very soon. Before 2009 i saw snow like twice or 3 times in Ireland in my life and now its commonplace. Know what you mean about not getting used to it, i am practically IN the fire every evening and im still cold. :o

Don't you have general heating at houses? I've noticed some countries that don't have so extreme weathers don't have it.

I'm not going to be able to use fireplace for the next 2 weeks :( Because we placed Christmas tree in front of it. We still have warm but I'm gonna miss it. It's the or game in real life - Christmas tree or fireplace? :P

We have heating but the frozen pipes are a common issue and can leave people with no shower, i have a fire and back boiler as heating, it can take a while to heat up the house so a few electric fires are necessary ha!

As for your choice, to hell with the Christmas tree, the fireplace wins every time

Oh, I see. Damn, I would make a huge rant here too if I couldn't take shower in the morning.

I chose Christmas tree after all. I'm gonna miss fireplace but I couldn't resign from the tree :) It's still warm and it smells so nice. There will be couple of months more to use the fireplace afterwards :)

Yoicks, eight hundred dollars? Hope you got a kiss with that. :P Or at least a complete brake-system flush and refill included.

Nah, calipers for my car were 215 each. I had to replace them because they were sticking and that cause my pads and rotors to get pitted and warn thus them having to be replaced as well.

Ah, that'll do it. :D

On topic: My rant is that I was called into work this morning, for a project that ultimately fizzled. So, I was able to leave early. 8)

I don't know what your prices for car parts are there but $800 sounds much for what you mentioned. I was once in US and I bought with my friends a whole car for less money. It stopped in the middle of the street couple of times and stopped working at all after a month. I wonder now how much we'd pay for the repairs if just a couple of items for a car would be more exepensive than itself :P

Lonestrar, is that a rant? You don't seem too depressed about getting home earlier :)

Dearest, the rant was about being called into work while I was on vacation/holiday. Certainly, I was glad to get back home and to other things. :D

Good, used car parts can be had reasonably. Next on the scale is refurbished/rebuilt parts for a little more [and certainly with some sort of warranty]. Then there are brand-new items; I'm guessing this is what Tip may have been referring to with the brake calipers.

Sometimes a decent used car can be had for a low price; ofttimes it's "let the buyer beware." And sometimes a repair can approach or exceed the prevalent resale value of a given car. For instance...my sister just paid over $700 for a repair, oil change and inspection on her 1991 Buick. Given its age, the car's current resale value is probably under $1,000. But, mechanically, it's in good shape. So, at least for the time being it makes sense to keep it.

Oh, haha, alright. That's not fair they called you then.

Okay, so I don't continue car topic because besides how to drive I know nothing about that :P

I am sick to the teeth of this white Xmas lark .. I just want it over NOW.

Discovered this morning that I have plumbing issues to deal with in the New Year (Plumbers = money = misery)

To hell with the whole thing I'm just going to get pissed - is 11am too early for a glass of wine? .... good job I have my internet access & my online friends to rant with.

No i feel your pain Fran, i havent been able to have a shower for a week since the temperatures plummeted so its been the old fashioned method of sink and facecloth and soap, real 1920s stuff. We had the external pipe to the shower buried into the wall to stop it from freezing but it hasnt worked and the plumber cant come back until the New Year. On top of that its so cold i have to go to bed fully clothed each night and read whatever book im reading in front of the fire. Not to mention the fact that my ESB bill will be at least 700euro next month!

Ah well we are still alive and well eh its a little consolation anyway, and go ahead with the wine, its Christmas girl! Someone has to drink it.

Oh, as a side-rant, if i see this ad one more time on TV i am actually going to kick it in, you know EXACTLY what i mean Fran:
