Paperhearts - Meg Wiviott (Spoilers)

Post by Wildminx1 »

This is book was amazing. I absolutely loved it. Based on a true story. Set in a poem format, it tells a beautiful story about two girls caught in World War II. The are both Jews and are caught by Nazi police where they are sent to Auschwitz. During their stay, Fani decides to get all the girls together to write a birthday card for Zlaka. If they are caught, they will be killed. I loved that this book proves that friendship and family is the strongest bond that cannot be broken and that they would of never survived without their faith. That even though these girls were in the worst possible situation, they still kept their faith. I applaud the real girls that this story is based on and the author for capturing the spirit of the horrible situation.

I loved this book. It was a really light read, finished it over the course of the day, but the poems were beautifully structured and there was a right choice of diction. Usually, I wouldn't read a poem based story but Paper Hearts was heart-warming and sad, that I wished that the events never happen in real life. However, I like how the author allows serious themes to resent themselves in the book and I hope that more people would read it because it's a small insight to what actually happen during the war.
