If you are an avid fiction reader looking to break into more non-fiction [uUnbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is the place to start. It reads so much like an incredible fiction novel that you have to keep reminding yourself that the events actually took place. This book follows Louis Zamperini from the Olympic games to the war and takes you on his absolutely unbelievable and horrible journey. As you read you can be both blown away by the evil of man and the amazing human spirit that can, in spite of the worst odds, remain unbroken. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone that is looking for a good read, no matter what kind of book they usually like.

The writing is perfect. No one else could have captured this story like Hillenbrand. Unbroken is a must read, and go ahead and buy a hard copy because you will want to pass it on.

This book was pretty difficult to read. It felt like the torture scenes and POW camp experience took up over half of the story, when I would have liked a lot more on his life before and after that experience. I found his childhood and teenage years very interesting, and enjoyed the details the book provided on that. I definitely wanted to know more about what he did with his life after, so more details on those experiences of settling back into a normal life and the creation of his organization to help at-risk youth, could have replaced some of the graphic POW camp scenes. I also wanted to hear more about the process of forgiving his torturer, as that could have been a central theme in the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. It gave a good look into how the POWs were treated and how it affected their lives. Not just while they were captured but long after they were free again. I also found it interesting because most books about WWII center around the Holocaust and what the Jews went through. This book shows us that there was in fact suffering and abuse in other places as well. I would highly recommend reading Unbroken!
