Casey is only fifteen years old, but her stepfather has decided to marry her off to a sick, perverted man: Alfred, the governor's son. Minutes before the wedding is to take place, Casey’s mother urges her to run. Casey flees through the jungle, where a mysterious woman rescues her. A woman who was once part of the Twenty-One Butterflies - a female band of elite pirates who wage war against corrupt city leaders and all who are in league with them. Casey decides that she wants to join the Twenty-One Butterflies, so the former pirate sets her on the path.
When Casey arrives on Butterfly Islands, she discovers that it is a beautiful mystic place covered in every sort of butterfly. But when night falls, the butterflies disappear and are replaced with moths that carry horrible parasites, and the lands are roamed by the twisted Five Sisters. As she tries to earn the trust of the Butterflies, she also struggles with her own fears, desires and just being a teenage girl. When a trip to God’s Mercy - the floating city in the sky - turns disastrous, everything changes. Casey is captured by her brutal husband-to-be and discovers that there is a traitor amongst the Butterflies. Now the race is on to save her new friends, and possibly make new allies along the way.
Butterfly Islands is amazing and well written. The plot is engaging and exciting from beginning to end; the main and supporting characters are clearly defined and well rounded. My favorite thing about this book is that Chris Seabranch writes such amazing descriptions that instantly pull the reader into the world created by the book. Also, the idea of a female band of pirates is original and well executed.
I would recommend this book to anyone that is looking for something different and unique. This book has a little romance, lots of action, some mystery and of course, treasure. I could not stop reading this book - I read the whole work in one sitting and when I was finished, it left me wanting more! The book does contain some parts that aren’t appropriate for the young readers, but for ages 16 and up, it would be great.
The book was well edited, but there were two spelling errors that I picked up on (one of them being a character name). Also, at the end of the book, there is an author’s note that has a website link. The website has artwork of the cities and the characters that readers should definitely look at. I think it will help those who may have a hard time picturing the cities or characters themselves.
I give Butterfly Islands 4 out of 4 stars. Butterfly Islands is engaging, full of action, and well written. I guarantee you will fall in love with Casey and her adventures. This was the first of a series of six books -and I eagerly await the second installment.
