The Night Watch by Sergei: not sure if I understood 2nd part

Just finished the first two parts, loving it so far.

SPOILERS AHEAD

I'm not quite sure about the ending of the second part: Gesar was behind everything? That means he was the one who set up Maxim to kill the dark ones, he made sure that happened when Anton didn't have an alibi. He risked Anton getting killed (shot at by Zabulon etc.) or captured and he risked Maxim/Egor/Anton getting killed in the final battle.

Also, Anton killed the dark Other at the station for nothing and the twilight figure was pretty pointless?

It's an awesome book, but if that is the case, the ending is a let down in my eyes :/
