For that my favourite would be Your First Novel by Ann Rittenburg and Laura Whitcomb. The first part of the book looks at all thr various elements you must consider when writing, while the second part - which is written by a writing agent - talks about how to get your novel published. You may want to try any of the Idiot's Guide books about writing.
I also liked How not to Write a Novel by Howard Mittelmark and Sandra Newman. It took a different approach than many writing books by pointing out the various mistakes an author can make when writing a novel. It teaches you to avoid these things and therefore make your story better.[/i]

An excellent paperback is “How I Write" by top selling author Janet Evanovich. She’s written many novels including the 17-book series Stephanie Plum. This one is filled with her tips and useful information. Perhaps the genre is not your style but her advice is constructive and supportive.
Stephen King fans need not apply!
