When I chose Ruby with the Emerald Eyes by Kimberley Franks, I was skeptical. There are not many books I like (I'm a very picky reader). So, I'll let you imagine my surprise and delight to find myself in a fast pace historical romantic suspense novel that had me on the edge of my seat. It's not every day I find a treasure.

At the start of this book, Ruby Canterbury has just buried her father, her last close relative. The grave's not even covered yet and she finds workers leaving because they believe her unable to manage her large estate because she is a woman. Determined to prove herself, she follows her gut and hires several new employees including the very handsome Charles Gerard, a man haunted by his past mistakes and also determined to prove himself.

Together, Ruby and Charles embark on a quest to find family treasure rumored to have been buried on her estate by her eccentric Grandfather. But, as they start to put the pieces of the elaborate puzzle together, Ruby begins to wonder if she should trust Charles or her visiting cousin Henri Lefvre, especially after a series of unexplained events.

There’s a line in the second chapter where Ruby says “Sometimes, a woman needs to start her story instead of waiting for others to do it for her”. And I believe that is one of the morals of the story. One shouldn’t wait to start the story of their life, man or woman. One of the other morals is no matter how badly you believe you messed up, you should never give up hope that forgiveness and redemption may find it’s way to you. You just need to willing to ask for it.

I enjoyed this book immensely. It took me two days to read and I probably would've finished it in one day if life hadn't stepped in! The story is fast paced yet not rushed, dialogue is entertaining and engaging, and the characters are well thought out. If you expect any ripping off of clothes here, let me warn you now, you will not find it (which is one of the reasons I like it). All in all, I highly recommend it. It has 4 out of 4 stars from me. I must also add that this book left me yearning for a prequel. Grandfather Canterbury proved to be an interesting character all in himself!

Great review! I'm not a huge fan of romance novels, but this one sounds like a good story!
