I read a relatively new author, Steven Shrewsbury...he's pretty good, though I've steered away from some of his darkest horror works.

I used to read a lot of King, but also felt a decline.

I actually preferred James Herbert as a story teller, as opposed to King. Maybe I could identify better as they were set mostly on my home turf rather than all US driven like King's.

For down and dirty blood and guts, Shaun Hutson was always worth a nod.

i think king is at his best when he is writing psychological horrors, such as misery and geralds game, and i love his classics too (carrie, the shining, etc). i find it fascinating that novels which are so widely consumed are not regarded with the same level of study that more literary fiction is, and i say that as literature student! although i love the classics i do sometimes wonder about the value of the course i am in the middle of; surely part of being a literature student should be to understand the value of reading as it stands in todays world...? and who is to say that novels like frankenstein by mary shelley are any more worthy than contemporary horror? i believe, and always will believe, that people should approach books without prejudice and find merit (or not) based on their own reading and interpretation of it.
what's your top ten...?

I have found a great new horror writer. Jonathan Maberry..... writes like vintage Stephen King. Also Steven Rage... a newer author. Both are on my Myspace page. :)

I've met Stephen King, and I'm a big fan of his also. There is alot of "horror" books and movies that I like and enjoy. And some not so much.

Personally, I think "horror" is being used too narrowly in this forum. For me, a "horror" novel (or story for that matter) is any capable of horrifying me. In this sense, Chuck Palahniuk would hold the place as my favorite horror writer. For anyone looking for a book capable of "using you up," so to speak, I highly recommend Chuck's book "Haunted."

Right now my favorite authors of horror include Iain Rob Wright, Bentley Little, John Saul, Dean Koontz, and Stephen King.

I am a huge fan of Stephen King's earlier works such as The Shining, Cujo, Thinner, Skeleton Crew, Carrie, The Green Mile and The Stand. I have read all of his books but some of the newer ones are not nearly as good as his earlier works. They simply do not feel like "horror" to me.
I understand that his next book is a collection of short stories and I am hopeful that this new book will get back to basics!

I've been wanting to read 11/22/63 by King, but it's so daunting and the price is higher than I like to spend on books, even at cheapo stores... Can anyone recommend?

I don't have a favorite horror author but I have read a few Stephen King novels and I have to say that I feel he is vastly overrated. Not one of his books made me feel a tiny bit scared.

Found another fantastic author- Matt Shaw. He and Iain Rob Wright have tons of books available on Amazon and you cannot beat the prices. Also, if you join their websites (which is free to do) they give you several books for free just for joining and then periodically this continues as they have new materials come out. You should check them out-

Not a big fan of King either. Love John Saul and Bentley Little. Perhaps not the most thought-provoking, but very chilling nonetheless.

I grew up reading everything by Stephen King when I was a teen. While he is a good writer to boot, I would prefer the likes of HP Lovecraft and Edgar A. Poe. Lovecraft's especially is good at that dread-is-coming feel to his stories, while King is more in-your-face terror.

I first read Intensity by Dean Koontz and loved it! I also think his Odd Thomas books are good! The characters really come alive for me. I love Stephen Kings earlier work. Some of his books are just bizarre and rambling, lol. Gerald's Game was terrible to me. There's a thin line in Horror between good and crap, lol.
