A Journey of Love & Romance is Piyush C. Kothary’s collection of poetry dedicated to the memory of his deceased wife. Throughout the collection, his words celebrate his wife’s life and mourn her passing. It is a celebration of life, love, and family that may be able to touch even the most guarded heart.
Poetry is one of my favorite genres. I enjoy the way that many poets play with language and form to communicate the message with more than just words. In Mr. Kothary’s collection, the structure of the poetry seems very basic to me. There are few concessions to poetic language or attempts to use rhythm to enhance the poems’ impact and presentation. Instead, the poems seem to be regular prose that is merely broken up into stanzas and lines. It feels more like the author was writing journal entries than poetry at times.
The emotions in the poems are undoubtedly their saving grace. The feelings expressed by Piyush Kothary are both powerful and palpable. As one reads through the poems, the form may be unimpressive to some, but poetic form is also occasionally rendered unnecessary because of the profundity of the emotions that inspired Mr. Kothary to write. The reader can experience the shock, grief, pain, loneliness, and nostalgia that permeate the various poems in the collection.
More than just powerful, these poems are also universal. Loss is part of the human experience, and the grace with which Mr. Kothary accepts his own devastating pain can help ease the trauma of tragedy for his readers. These poems may be specifically about one woman and her family, but the emotions and the situation are common to most people, if not all.
I am rating A Journey of Love & Romance 3 out of 4 stars. The power of its contents merits a high rating, but I would want to see a more sophisticated poetic form (in language, structure, or a combination of both) in order to give it the perfect 4/4. Other readers may disagree with the weight I give to poetic form, so for these readers, please consider this book a 3.5/4 instead. This collection may be more appealing to people who do not usually choose to read poetry because of its journal-like feel. Overall, reading this collection was a very moving and powerful experience, and it is one that I can happily recommend to most readers.
