Ye Gods, we must be related. I get the same here. :P

Oh yes!!!!!!!!!! People here in Colorado are notorious for this!! I was once behind someone who took the entire turn arrow to make a left. He basically screwed the rest of us behind him who had to wait for the next arrow.

My rant for the rest of the month is work. Man... i love my job but i think it hates me. Fourteen hour days, six days a week with very few hours to sleep in between. I actually said screw it and spent the night in the store last night. Just curled up on the floor and took a two hour nap. Ugh. I went a total of three days with nothing more than 20 minutes of sleep and several pots of coffee. Plus i think all the work-no sleep thing is making me sick. Cold chills one minute, melting the next. I need to go see a doctor but it will be good past February before i even get a chance to do that (God i hope i'm better by then. ugh.). You know its a bad thing when, right in the middle of stocking a shelf, you stop and look off in the distance all dumb like and try to remember the last time you had eaten. And yes. It was two days of no food before i realized i was hungry. Plus i found out today that my cats been missing for the last two days. But i haven't seen her in four (i'm currently living with my mom so no one think i abandoned her/him/hermaphrodite.). I wouldn't know because i haven't been home. No wonder she ran away. I would run away if i didn't see my mom for that link of time too. Man i feel horrible all around. Ugh.

Laci you need to take a handle on your 'work life balance' or you will pay dearly health wise in the future. You are falling into the trap of thinking you can't be done without but believe you me if you weren't there the world and your store would still go on. If you were self employed there might be some logic (!) to what you are doing but as an employee you are simply being complicit in your own exploitation & bolstering someone elses profit margin.

Get it together girl and lets see you use some of the bolshy spirit we see here on the site to fight your own corner.

^ 100% spot on Fran.

I will give you a bit of advice, Laci. I used to work 12 hour days at my job and every second weekend both to make a good impression and get extra money but the penny dropped one day when i had spent from 6am to 10pm in the lab testing samples (thinking i would really get brownie points) one day, only to get hammered by my boss the next day when he picked on the 1% i had got wrong and totally ignored the 99% i got right plus my long hours. I had never been as deflated in my working life as that day, then it hit me: I was just a number, if you keep doing overtime they keep asking you, they take advantage of your good nature and more often than not they are not appreciative, they are probably laughing at you. Since that day i only do overtime about once a month and i just put in a normal 8 hour working day, no more no less.

Money isnt everything Laci and i urge you to spell it out to your manager that you need a reduction in hours as you are feeling a bit tired from the long hours, any reasonable employer will agree and fit you a more reasonable roster. As Fran says, that store you work at was there long before you and its going to be there long after you. You are 100% replaceable and a mere cog in a machine, im not trying to be cruel just giving you the facts. Your health is your wealth girl, sort it out!

Oh i know guys.. it is horrible, but sadly i'm not even the only one "living" there. Our store had four managers. 3/4 are "living" there. The 1 not, of course, is the main boss. But one actually got fed up, and without telling anyone, walked out yesterday. I don't blame her but with one man down it means more hours for the two already stuck managers until they can find a suitable replacement. Even some of the other workers are there from open to close. It's not even that they're asking us to be there, really. It's just stuff that has to be done and it's never ending on the long hall so we've apparently decided, unconsciously, that we needed to hit it head on. I finally gave in and came home last night to sleep a full nights sleep. I dragged the other manager with me, since she lives a good hour away and i didnt want her to fall asleep while driving, to bunk on the couch. It's 11:30 here and neither of us are there yet. I feel really bad about it, but if i dont give myself some time, i'll end up leaving as well. I know Sandi feels the same. Of course we'll give up and go in a little later but atleast then we'll have had some much needed sleep. Plus time away from work is priceless at this moment. Plus i feel a little better. I just keep thinking to myself "Soon you'll be somewhere far far away and some good distance from all of this craziness and stress." If it wasnt for that i would probably have already folded, but the longer i'm there the more money i'll make and the faster i can leave it. haha. I know money's not everything, trust me i know, but i'm just keeping in mind all of the wonderful things i'll get to do next year with that extra money. Plus it will make the "screw you" *throws keys at boss* next year much more appreciated. Just one more year of workaholic-Laci then Dee can drag me any little place she'd like.

And Mike honestly it doesnt bother me for them to just see me as a number anymore, i only see them as a paycheck. haha. Last year that thought would have depressed me, but with all the glorious things in mind, i honestly dont care anymore. I know that sounds bad but with crazy hours like mine that have built up over the years it's very true. I love my job, truly i do, but there's a limit to how much that love goes when it interferes with everything else.

But Laci its still perfectly possible to travel around for a few months on the cheap, staying in hostels, going on tours etc without having to put yourself in hospital with exhaustion. Is it really worth that extra few hundred when you are so tired all the time? I know you say that its only another year or so but a year is a long time and already one of your managers have snapped. Anyone who lives in a store, no matter how busy, needs their head examined. Its tempting to just count off the months but be aware that they probably will throw even more work at you when they see how much you already do..

Yeah i know, Mike, and normally i would be the first persson to run out on that much exhaustion, but i'm trying to be optimistic. Plus when i leave, after everything, it will just make it that much worse for my boss since i wont be there to pick up the slack. I'm always the one going "oh no dont worry about it... i got it. Oh i'll do that. You need sleep, go home."ect, ect. Maybe the higher up corp wont see my goneness as a bad thing, but she sure will. Sandi's leaving next year as well, which will leave my boss completely screwed. haha. Maybe it's mean, but it's very much worth it that way. Working doesnt bother me, honestly it doesnt, but if i can work as hard as possible to make my escape that much sweeter, than i'm all up for it. Hopefully my body can keep up with me. Ha.

And yes i agree... i do need my head examined. haha.

I was so excited about my first lab for microbiology and all we did was go over the microscopes (we have been using them for 4 semesters now.. I think we know how to use them by now)... needless to say I was very bored.

The weather in New Jersey is ruining my job attitude. No joke now it has snowed every Wed and Sat for the past month. I'm usually in the field all week but because of the piss poor weather jobs are getting canceled and I'm near positive they will all be rescheduled for the same day. Okay maybe not the same day but the same week. And because jobs are being moved around that will make my January and February bonus' look like poop.

Why can't I just win the lottery, open a small flower shop and help people.

Sad to hear Waterstone are closing two of their bookstores in Dublin. Their Dawson St store was always on my visit list when I was in the city. :(

Dont think there are that many Waterstones left then, in the Republic? I know there is one in Cork, although if the HMV there closes then it may be affected. Just saw the news, sad about the workers losing their jobs and as he said "Amsterdam is not really an option". I am not mad about Easons, always found it a bit sterile, Waterstones are good for the special offers.
