Blood on My Hands: An Autobiography by Shannon O'Leary is an autobiography about the author's cruel childhood. Shannon O’Leary paints a vivid story of surviving emotional, physical, and sexual abuse at the hands of her crazed serial killer father Patrick.
Her father was a belligerent drunk with a mean streak. Their family pets would randomly turn up mangled or dead. Meanwhile his rage kept growing and becoming harder to ignore. The young family tried their best to stay out of his way and keep him happy. Shannon hid in small places in the house, under the blankets, or in trees-but the monster would still find her. The more lighthearted parts of the story show us how she dealt with her tragic life.
Blood on my Hands is set in Rural Australia in the 1960's and 70's. The author describes a time where certain people considered a man's family as his property. Her family’s pleas for help were ignored many times by the authority figures around them. Despite these struggles, her family was determined to start a new life free of the tortures of a madman. Starting anew did not come easy for the O’Leary’s: they faced poverty, ridicule, and the constant threat of being tortured or worse.
Blood on my Hands is not a book for the faint of heart. The detailed descriptions of the twisted games her sadistic father played with her were horrifying. I went into this book knowing it was a true story of abuse, but the torture and pain the author described were quite disturbing. Shannon O’Leary effectively tells the story through the lens of her childhood mind, making the events that took place even more shocking. I was inspired by her family's determination to survive and persevere despite the terrible trials they faced. Whenever I thought her situation could not get worse for her, it did-but she never gave up.
I rate Blood on my Hands 4 out of 4 stars. I found the book so compelling that I was unable to put it down until I finished it. Shannon O’Leary is a very strong writer and succeeded in depicting her childhood and revealing the psychology behind the control abusers have over their victims. Despite being a story about unthinkable cruelty, it is also a story about strength and perseverance. We can draw immense inspiration from her capacity to heal and overcome such brutal circumstances. I found Blood on my Hands to be both terrifying and full of hope, I highly recommend it.
