Escape to Eden by Rachel McClellan is a unique dystopian novel. It began with plenty of action and continued the fast pace throughout the book. When a teen girl, Sage, wakes up in a hospital bed with no memory, she begins a harrowing journey to figure out her identity and help her family.

When she wakes with no memory of her past, the only clue she has are the words "Run Now" written on her hand. Sage relies on her instincts to escape from the Institute. She meets intriguing characters along the way that are determined to help her reach safety. They are living in a society that has tried to create the perfect human by altering DNA. These "Primes" have incredible superpowers, but also have shortened life spans. Humans that have pure unaltered DNA, "Originals", are wanted for their DNA that increases the lifespans of Primes. Everyone was out to get the few Originals.

This book was one exciting scene after another. It was a fast paced read that had me hooked from the beginning. This was a plot-driven story with lots of action and a little violence. However, not enough that I wouldn't let my young teens read it. The setting was a wrecked society that the author describes vividly from hidden forest areas to clinical institutes.

The characters were varied and well developed. Each member of the group played a unique role and worked well together. The main point of view is from the heroine, Sage. It was a twist to have a main character without special abilities or supernatural powers. Sage was a strong, caring, pure human. Her goal was to find her brother and get them to safety. The other characters were genetically altered and all had special abilities. Colt was fascinating as a Noc. He also had a strong back story. The author created a very unique world unlike many of the other dystopian novels. I found Jenna to be slightly annoying, but saw the good in her come out at the end. I enjoyed reading about all the genetically altered creations and how society turned out that way.

Based on my above observations and the fact that this appeared to be a well-edited book, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. Fans of YA dystopian fiction should definitely read this novel. I reached the ending and wanted it to keep going. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Oh this sounds like a good one! It is interesting that the main character is one of the ones without super powers.

Good review. I don't think I have read a dystopian novel before. It sounds very interesting.
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.

Great review. Sounds like an interesting story. However, when I was reading the sample it sounded quite similar to the The Host by Stephanie Meyer.

beat his heart until it was unconscious.

What an interesting thought experiment! Would you rather have superpowers even if it significantly lowered your life expectancy, or would you rather have a longer, if more ordinary life?
