Love & Lust is a 43-page young adult novella written by Ravi Ranjan Goswami. The premise of the story is to depict the differences between love and lust throughout the course of a lifetime. While I was able to understand the message of this story, there are a lot of editorial needs that made this story difficult to read and understand at times. For this reason, I am rating this novella 1 out of 4 stars.

Immediately I was drawn to this novella as the author used a quote from a favorite author of mine to preface his opening chapter. I had hopes that there would be an introduction to each new chapter similar to the first, with a quote that foreshadowed the upcoming chapter. Unfortunately, this was the only instance which was a bit of a disappointment.

In the opening chapter readers are introduced to a young man named Rajiv. Rajiv is a stellar student who is focused on his studies and has a few close friends. While Rajiv’s name seems to be spelt differently from time to time throughout the novella, he remains the primary voice throughout the pages.

Readers are introduced to two female characters early on, Rajani and Kavita. Rajani is a girl that Rajiv is crushing on and is trying to and is trying to find ways to get close to her. Meanwhile, during chapter 2, the primary voice of the novella changes to Kavita, where she tells readers about her undying affection for Rajiv.

The change of voice from Rajiv and Kavita could have been established better, either with a page break or altogether new chapter identifying the new point of view. However, it was a bit hard to follow as the point of view could change from one paragraph to the next.

The biggest barrier that I came across when reading this novella was a language barrier. The author is from India and translating this story to the English language made certain sentences hard to translate. I was able to get the general meaning the author was going for, but conversation flow was hard to interpret.

Even though this was a novella and not meant to be an in-depth story, the author could have spent some more time fine tuning and adding details. The best chapter I read was Chapter 11, which appeared on page 22 of 43. Chapter 11 provided a nice, detailed background o a new character that had been introduced and provided a background story that could have evolved into a full story itself without needing any of the previous chapters.

The general theme of this novella was to portray the lives o a young man and young woman in India who are trying to figure out the best and appropriate ways to have relationships. With more attention to detail and grammar editing, this would be a decent story for young adults with a strong message.
