To those of you who are looking to promote your own novel, this book has plenty of great advice. At first glance, the book feels like just another one of those "Write a good book, duh!" kind of advice articles that you can read online anywhere, but that's truly not the case. I found that the ten steps were helpful, reminding us all that being an Indie author is not as simple as uploading a book to kindle and singing to the skies, "Voila!" and expecting the readers to come flocking.
In addition to reminding us how important it is to edit our novels to a refined T, Scott reminds us that it is important to value our time versus our money and to determine early on how will we market based off what our budget is and what the value of our time is based on said budget. This I found to be very helpful because it shows even if you are that broke college kid surviving on ramen and your parent's leftovers every weekend, there's still a good chance in hell for you to become that amazing author you always dreamed of being. Not only that but the reverse is also true. You could be making six figures and outsource your tasks to others. No matter what your situation is, there is no reason for you to not write because no matter what your circumstances are, you can make it happen if you truly want it.
After diligently reiterating to us we can succeed, the author's next step is to teach us how to use media and fellow readers in our marketing plan. The most important thing we can do is invest our time and effort into making sure that our well written and well-edited book gets out in the world and into the hands of readers who will enjoy them, whether it's through book clubs, bloggers, or those who just enjoy reviewing. Without these wonderful people, we cannot get our title out there in the face of others who would pay for our book based on the feedback of others. It will be thanks to these readers that we are successful.
I'm just skimming the surface of the 10 steps and feel like there is so much more to say. I would rate 3 out of 4 stars for the 10 Step Plan To Promote Your Book. Although there're so many wonderful things to say about this book, and I obviously would recommend it to any author, there's just one flaw that I can't avoid mentioning. The kindle version of this book seems to cut off the bottom part of the page every two to three pages. At times this made it difficult to understand what I was reading as a sentence or two would be missing and I'd have to read the next page without it.
Overall, I believe this book is a worthy read. I enjoyed the snarkiness the author conveyed in the beginning, and I appreciated the knowledge that was given throughout the steps. I intend to refer back to the book frequently as I write during NaNoWriMo this year.
