Confused about The Lovely Bones

Post by Vee9 »

How is it a story about redemption?

Redemption is about confessing and accepting your mistakes.
In my opinion, it applies more so to the criminal/ bad person than the victim because they've committed a sin, so it takes a lot more for them to ask for forgiveness.

Susie Salmon is the victim, though.
All she wants is vengeance for her killer. She hasn't done anything wrong.

So what does she have to redeem if this is "a story about redemption?"

(I'm only asking for the main character, not Mr. Harvey)

Doesn't redemption also mean to be relieved or freed of something?
In that case I would have an answer: Susie has to let go of her life, accept that it has been taken from her violently and "move on", even though that does sound strange seeing as she is in heaven.

Interesting point ... Redemption can also mean to recover or rescue. I suppose from a religious point of view Heaven is a rescue or a recovery for the individual. Or it could also be Susie deciding to release her family and permitting them to recover or that awful term 'move on'.
That book does seem to remain in the mind ... it must be about 5years since I read it and it's still lodged in my mind.

Never mind, 'Wasn't this book supposed to be about redemption' I really don't understand what the big buzz about this book was, I don't think it was anything special? Yeah it was a good idea for a book but I really don't think that it was written very well? Shine some light on the matter for me?

Some books should not be made into film. Reading a book and watching a movie are 2 differant experiances. I have no desirer to see the movie I enjoyed the book! When you read a book you take out of it what you want, Susie needed to acccept that she was dead and let go, find inner peace.

Oh, yes, I think so. I must look at what the movie camera shows me. But when I read a book I use my own imagination to interpret a story.

Often whole chapters are omitted from a book because a producer or director adapt the story for on-screen viewing. And sometimes a vividly imagined book character is let down by poor acting. It’s nice to compare but I always come back to the book!
