A Book considered great that you did not like

Post by Jolyon Trevelyan »

Name a book that is considered among the greatest ever written that you did not like.

For me Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra i just found this book to be extremely boring it took me almost 3 years to finish it. Its one of the worst books i have read. Which i guess is weird in away because i remember reading that it was considered the greatest book ever written.

I should hide somewhere after I say this, but I HATED Lolita. I was reluctant about the theme subject, but I didn't even get to hate it because of that. I just couldn't get past the writing! I don't even know how to describe it, it was like an old crocheted doily (if that makes any sense)...

I wasn't a fan of The Scarlet Letter, I just couldn't get interested in the book.

"War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy. Read it in high school and was bored by it.

It is amazing how two people can read the same book and have such diametrically different opinions of it. I respect your opinion but contrary to yours I consider Don Quixote by Cervantes to be one of the finest books I have ever read. I found it to be an enormously entertaining comedy. I read the Putnam translation (1949).

After 600 years it still ranks very high on the lists of the finest novels ever written and many book organizations of note consider it the finest literary work ever written. It is the second-most translated book in history.

Lord of the Flies.

I found it so bleak, depressing. I realize that is what Golding was going for as he worked with topics like civilization vs. savagery, individuality vs. group-think, etc... but for me, the book was a bleak, hope-destroying, depression-inducing horror. I will never read it again, and I have never wanted to read any of his other books.

Anything by William Falkner. My AP English teacher was crazy about him, but I found his books absolutely dreadful.

1984 by George Orwell. I had to read it for history class and it was one of the most boring books I have ever read.

I so badly disliked Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck. I feel like I should go back and try it again now that I'm older (sometimes that helps) but at the time, I hated it so much. I was totally into it and then when it ended, I was so angry, I threw it across the room.

On the other hand, we both like Dostoyevsky, and, may I say, you look so much like him judging from your picture that the two of you could be twins! :lol2:

Catcher in the Rye. I just never connected with any of the characters or the story.

To Kill A Mockingbird was terrible to me. By the end of the first chapter the story was painfully obvious and I don't believe you make a point by repeatedly bashing someone in the head with something.

War and Peace, Catcher in the rye, To kill a mockingbird and yes "The alchemist". I read the whole book but did not find it very interesting. To this day i never understood the hype surrounding the last one
What is the most special thing I did today- I was MYSELF. Happy and in love and unapologetically myself.
