I truly enjoyed reading Solaris Seethes written by Janet McNulty. It’s an action-packed story chock full of adventure for readers of all ages. The story hooks you at the very beginning as Rynah, thrilled with her recent engagement, arrives at the underground lab to begin her day on the planet Lanyr in a faraway galaxy. As the lab’s security system is taken down for an annual systems purge, the lab is upended as an earthquake destroys the building. In the ensuing chaos, those left standing are attacked by a group that steals the magic crystal that has held the magnetic fields in balance and makes the planet habitable. Much to Rynah’s dismay, the attack is lead by her fiancé Kranor. Rynah fights her way to an exit cave and makes her escape. Knowing she only has moments as the now unstable planet crumbles, she makes her way to a ship to leave the imploding planet. Putting others first, she misses the last transport but luckily remembers her dead grandfather's spaceship. She manages to find and board his spaceship and safely gets away only to learn that her grandfather had foretold her need and built the ship with an artificial intelligence specifically for her. The ship, named Solaris, teams with Rynah on a plan to save the universe by locating 6 magic crystals hidden throughout the galaxy.

Rynah wants revenge. She is humiliated at being tricked by Kranor who only used her as a pawn in his quest to steal the crystals and control their power. However, Solaris, a spaceship with a distinctive personality, instructs Rynah on her grandfather’s research into the ancient texts where he learned about the crystals, their power, and the team of travelers that together with Rynah, would find the crystals and keep them from evil.

Solaris is able to bring together an unlikely collection of people from different eras on Earth. Solon, a scribe who tends to daydream, is brought on board. As is Alfric, a viking king and warrior. Solaris also brings an inventor from an advanced age on Earth named Tom and 16 year old Brie. Together with Rynah and Solaris, they journey to dangerous planets, fight pirates, and do battle with Kranor and his cronies. Many exciting adventures follow as the chapters unfold.

Solaris Seethes is an imaginative tale that engages the reader with plenty of action. The characters are well developed and have interesting and complex interactions with each other. The ship itself is a key character in the story as she displays an almost maternal compassion for the others. The ship having such a distinct personality was perhaps my favorite part of the book. I also liked the fast pace and near constant action. I would have liked to see the group use more creativity when in a tough spot as opposed to physically fighting their way out of most situations. But I understand that the violence was an integral part of the storyline.

I would heartily recommend Solaris Seethes as a good read for young adults as well as those of us that enjoy action and adventure books. I rate it at 4 out of 4 stars and can hardly wait to read the next book in the series. I gave it 4 stars because it is such a delightful story and I honestly feel many people will enjoy reading it.
