Thanks for the review. I really enjoy books where the characters are great and there are twists that the author just throws in there. This sounds like it would be light-hearted even though it seems sad with her dad's illness.

Great review! Sounds a bit too depressing for my tastes, though.

I love a book that keeps you guessing, or as you stated "jaw dropping" endings. I generally look for mystery books, or thrillers. I do think after reading your review I might enjoy the book. Also, I think it is important that the characters are described so that they come to life in your mind early in the first few pages, so you really care and want to know what happens and you are hooked.

What I have read so far has me interested in reading more. Want to find out how the mother died and how it affected Kate.

The only downside is that I would become impatient to continue reading “Kate’s chapters,” which I felt were the heart of the book.
Bookowlie made a good observation here. I have only read the sample so far, but there is a hint of this even there. I also liked the first line. While not great, and some might consider it a cliche, it did the job of capturing my attention.

First Line:
The last grain of sand was about to drop in her father’s invisible hourglass and there was nothing Kate Flaherty could do to stop it.

The free sample of this book was an instant attention grabber. The reader feels after this short introduction a connection to Kate and to her struggle. There is a desire to know more about her story and the story of her family which would presumably be revealed further on in the book. McFarren does an excellent job of drawing the reader in to what promises to be an exciting read.

I agree with the original review. I had difficulty pulling myself away from the book once I began reading. I found myself connecting with the characters.

I read the sample and got the book from Amazon. I can not wait to start reading it. It pulled me in just reading he sample and I can not wait to see how this works out with this couple. It also is ironic that it resembles part of my life right now, making me want to read it even more. The writing is fantastic. Keeps you intrigued, wanting to read more, not skimming through but reading every word..may have found a new favorite author..we sill see when I am done with it,and I read books fast and many! Thank you for this opportunity and for sharing your work

Thanks for the great review. Kate's heart is really battered by all the hurtful situations she is in - with her uncaring and now dying father and her troubled marriage. Very interesting story to read. Congratulations to the author for BOTD.

Thank you for your fantastic review, bookowlie! Actually, I already had this book on my WTR list! I think it sounds so good, and it has been chosen for a number of awards! The Audible sample picks up where the Kindle sample leaves off, so I got to check out a double sample! Even reading just the sample (and a short excerpt of audio), I feel like I'm really getting to know these characters! This seems like a very well written book...and the Audible sample is just as good! I love that when you buy the Kindle book on Amazon, you can get the Audible book at a huge discount (in this case, only $1.99!!). I know I always mention audiobooks in my posts, but I swear I am obsessed with them!! Sounds like today is best day to add both versions to my library! Thank you, again!

Despite the overall heavy tone I'm guessing exists throughout the book, the little bits of light-heartedness that you mentioned interests me. Such depth adds realism to a story plot, so I may check this book out due to that alone. Thanks for the review!

This sounds like the kind of book and narrative I may enjoy. The alternating dual character perspective style of storytelling seems to be all the rage these days ("The Girl on The Train", "her") but I have yet to grow tired of it-at this point anyway. As writers we so often feel that we almost can't be detailed ENOUGH in our descriptive prose, though I gotta admit the examples you cited are a BIT over the top. But, hey, I forever live by the motto, "To Each His/Her Own". Well constructed and compelling review bookowlie!

Flaherty's Crossing makes you think about the lost of a parent. My father in particular. Kate is sitting with her father while he is stricken with cancer. He is a shell of the man that he use to be. She thinks about the past and then now. Kate is confused. Her father is dying and her marriage is falling apart. Drew her husband is wrapped up in his career and she in hers. The review is good.
