Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is a story that follows the adventures of five travellers and a ship called Solaris, that has an artificial personality and emotions. The author quickly gets into the story and the first chapter is straight to the point, full of action and sets the pace for the rest of the book.

We begin with the destruction of Rynah’s planet after she is betrayed and a crystal, controlling the planets magnetic fields, is stolen. Fleeing the planet, she discovers her grandfather’s old ship and escapes, not realising that she is about so start out on an adventure.

The ship she escapes in, Solaris, has a mind of its own and feelings to match. Forcing Rynah to pay attention, Solaris teaches her about old myths and the story of the crystals. Hidden in myth, there is mention of four heroes that come from a planet far behind Rynah’s in terms of technology and is deemed unevolved.

Solaris brings these four unsuspecting heroes aboard and Rynah’s first task is convincing them they need to help her in order to protect the entire universe including their planet, Earth. The four heroes match a set of criteria specified in the myth and are from different ages, our past, present and our future; so, so they must overcome their differences and work together.

This book gets a 3 out of 4 star rating for a number of reasons. The first is there are some very small mistakes in the grammar and sentence structures; examples being stray quotation marks and the wrong tense used in one or two sentences.

The second issue I had was the overuse of parentheses. The author describes in detail, sometimes too much detail, many things throughout the book and each time this description is inside a set of parentheses rather than after a comma. This is a little off-putting and unnecessary; either only describe things when they add to the overall flow of the story, or use commas a little more.

I think the main problem for me was the main character, Rynah. While the story was imaginative and fast paced, I really could not feel anything for Rynah apart from annoyance. While this is a testament to the writing skills of the author, that I could feel such a strong emotion towards a character, it detracted from the book as a whole.

I found myself spending more time being annoyed at Rynah and her actions and opinions, than enjoying the book and the worlds I was invited to. I felt I missed out on some of the better parts of the story because I had a negative feeling in the back of my mind.

While I understand that the character is complex and has many layers, I feel that in a book, your main character should have you giving them your support and empathising with them. Not here, in this story I felt none of that and it disappointed me a little.

I am an adult and while I enjoy a good comedy, I assumed this would be a little more serious. I am unsure of the intended audience, but it read like it was written for a younger generation. I was expecting an intelligent piece of work aimed at a more mature demographic. This did not have a major impact on the book itself, but in parts, some sentences were very short and lacking any useful information. They were direct and straight to the point making it seem a little childish, but overall it was well written and fun.

I did enjoy the story, the four characters from Earth and Solaris, it just needs to be edited professionally to remove the few errors that were present. If you are looking for a space adventure with action and betrayal, give this book a read, just remember it is part one of four.
