I think I understand what you are saying.
I write poetry and short stories so sometimes when I am reading, I do not enjoy the book as a reader. Sometimes I read as a writer or editor and find myself criticizing too much to just enjoy the story. The same can happen when I watch movies sometimes.

Can I ask what your first language is?

I like writing fantasy stories, but I rotate between reading crime drama, adventure, fantasy, sci-fi and non-fiction. For yourself, try reading stories and watching movies in a genre other than the one you want to create stories for yourself. For example, if you create fantasy stories read mystery, sci-fi or anything other than fantasy. The variety of stories will also provide more exposure to different words and contexts in English.

I agree that it can help to read a genre other than the genre you are working on.

As far as learning more English, one suggestion I give to my students is to watch movies or read books in English that they are familiar with in their native language. If you know a movie well in your first language then it will help you to understand easier in English. You may also pick up some new words in English this way.

When I read my stories, I look at them as a reader. I try to put myself in my target audiences' shoes to figure out if the story is entertaining or not. If I read the story and don't like it, I start the editing process. If I like it, I leave it alone.

Also I have a need to read other books in my genre or watch films. They all serve as valuable writing material because I get so many ideas from them. :compta:
