Solaris Seethes is a young adult adventure and sci-fi by Janet McNulty. With a writing style reminiscent of J.K Rowling, and Cassandra Clare, McNulty weaves a fantastic tale of heroism and valor. The plot was fast-paced from the start and barely slowed down once the ball was rolling. With only a few grammar mistakes that do not take away from the plot, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars.

What do a Viking, a scholar from Ancient Greece, an inventor from the future and a teenage girl from modern time have in common? They have all been drafted by Solaris, a sentient, wise-cracking spaceship, captained by Rynah from the planet Lanyr, for a mission spanning the solar system. The unlikely crew must follow an ancient prophecy in order to find and retrieve six magic crystals that are needed in order to restore the magnetic field of Rynah's home planet before it is too late. Also looking for the crystals is Klanor, Rynah'a ex-fiancé who aspires to control the solar systems with the crystal's powers. It's a race against time as the crew of Solaris battle space pirates, asteroids and inner demons to save Rynah's home planet as well as the entire universe.

This story is curved towards young adults and adults who enjoy the works of J.K Rowling, Sherrilyn Kenyon (specifically The League series) and Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunter series. People who enjoy television shows such as CW's Arrow, the Flash and Legends of Tomorrow will love this book. What I liked most about this novel was the diverseness of the characters. They are all from different eras of Earth yet McNulty is able to focus on the core values that embody humans a species such as bravery, the willingness to help others, self-doubt, and knowing what is right and what is wrong.

One quote that stuck with me was a pearl of wisdom from the ship itself about staying calm under duress and that losing your cool will cause you to make mistakes.

Each time I think about Lanyr's fate and the ones who brought it about, I seethe with anger and loathing. I, more than anyone, want revenge, but revenge won't bring Lanyr, or the lives lost back. You asked me how I can be so calm, so cold. Maybe you should ask yourself what my calmness will achieve. Running off half-cocked solves nothing and only gets you killed in the end.

Solaris is just a ship, but the A.I controlling her is able to convey one of the intricate lessons that humans have to spend years desperately trying to grasp. Staying calm, cool and collected under pressure is an extremely hard ability to learn. Some people are born with it, others need to dig down deep and find that inner-peace that allows them to perform under pressure. Going off angry and frustrated will always end in failure.

In conclusion, this book was an amazing start to a series of adventure, space, and working together to save the world. Adding modern day beliefs with the beliefs of those in the past as well as the future creates a very interesting dynamic. I could not put this book down, and highly recommend others to read it.
