Did you ever want the perks of reading the results of scientific studies on weight loss without digging through all the jargon? Well, good news! Dr. Morton Tavel has already done it for you and compiled the results in layman's terms for your reading pleasure in his novel Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician’s Advice. While his journey on demystifying health-related misconceptions began with a focus on snake oil, Dr. Tavel’s voyage expands into a debunking extravaganza where he tackles a broad range of material.

The book is divided into three large sections: Tips, Myths, and Tricks, then is further subdivided into short chapters on a multitude of subjects. Tavel's writing is easy to read and informative on vast array of subjects from coffee to arsenic. The Tips section highlights the foods or supplements you might think are healthier than what they actually are, while calling to your attention what foods are ACTUALLY healthy for you. Once you know what to eat, the Myths section pulls the curtain on many popular misconceptions that everyone has heard around the beauty shop. Finally, Dr. Tavel rounds it out by blowing the whistle on common scams and swindles, which are nothing more than money rackets used by charlatans to dupe the unsuspecting consumer.

The book’s organizational layout allows for easy access to specific topics. The chapter division titles give mini summaries of what you about to read, so if you are knowledgeable and wish to skip the section or just want to find exactly what you need promptly, the title allows the reader to make that decision without scanning or delving deeper.

While this book was an easy read, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. There’s a lot of information here, and I mean A LOT, which makes the book a bit tiring to read. There also appeared to be a lot of reiteration on topics previously touched upon. However, the book was compiled in easily divided chapters, so while I would not recommend a full read through, it’s very easy to pick and choose what information you are looking for. The author writes in layman’s terms, so the reader can easily understand the concepts and ideas; however, the writing is most of the time very dry as you drag yourself across the desert of what appears to be unending health misconceptions.

So if you are a long time health nut looking to refresh your knowledge looking up specific health facts or tips, there’s always something new to learn in the broad range of topics covered by Dr. Tavel. Or if you a newbie looking for the light, this book will overwhelm you with enlightening information.

Great review. I read another review on this book that made me want to read it but after reading yours, I'm not sure anymore. The previous comment was a compliment. Thanks.
