Raven’s Peak by Lincoln Cole is an action-packed, supernatural thriller that is sure to resonate with all of the fans of this genre, as well as draw in new fans. The plot is very reminiscent of The CW original series, Supernatural. Like the TV series, there are hunters, demons and explicit gory scenes galore. Abigail, a hunter (our female lead), is on a mission to exterminate a low level demon when a number of circumstances result in her fleeing to Raven’s Peak with Haatim (our male lead) on another mission. The assignment at Raven's Peak is supposed to be a simple investigation into some rumors of supernatural activities. However, the truth is literally paranormal. This is a novel worth reading.

Lincoln’s story telling skills leaves little to be desired. The story is mainly character based. As the plot unravels, Abigail’s and Haatim’s troubled past becomes apparent. Their present crisis propels them to face their demons (get it?). The character development that ensues made me cheer for the success of the protagonists. All the other supporting characters were fleshed-out to an extent that allowed me to view them as real-life people and thus sympathize with their emotions and loathe their hypocritical behaviors. Moreover, Lincoln vividly portrays the setting while avoiding long, boring descriptive paragraphs dedicated to describing the surrounding. Every chapter flows smoothly into the next one until we are met with a major cliff-hanger in the end. Don’t despair! This is the first novel in Cole’s World on Fire trilogy.

Raven’s Peak main themes seem to be supernatural activity and religion. There is a secret multi-religious council that manages the hunters. I find the concept that leaders from different religious sects can work together to suppress demonic activity extremely unlikely. Another equally unlikely scene is that of a Catholic reverend referring to God, The Father, as a 'She'. These cases I just outlined may be there to add intrigue to the story. My religious bias (I'm a Christian) motivates me to not agree with certain religious aspects of the book but I can still objectively say that this book is well written.

Moreover, although the novel is stellar, there are a few minor shortcomings. There are some editorial errors that I deem too petty to mention. However, there is a case where a minor character is introduced as Derrick but then his name is abruptly and inexplicably changed to Tim. Later in the book, we meet another minor character named Tim. It seems to me that there was an editorial blunder. Although, this does not diminish the greatness of the story, the quality of the book is somewhat depreciated (my subjective opinion).

In conclusion, I rate Raven’s Peak 3 out of 4 Stars. I recommend this book to all avid readers. I also recommend that this book be read as supernatural fiction, not as a source to gain ‘concrete knowledge’ on religious views. If it wasn’t for the few demerits that I listed in the previous paragraph, I would have happily given this book a full-star rating.

I totally get what you mean about not agreeing with certain aspects of the book because I am a Christian too. This is not the type of book that I would read. Insightful review though - thanks.

Nice, thorough review! I like that you were able to give objective opinions of the book even though you didn't agree with some of the religious parts. The supernatural book genre is not my cup of tea so I will probably pass on this one.

Thanks for the feedback Flor26 and Bookwolie. I find it really hard to be objective about a book when it comes to religious views i don't agree with but I'm trying.

Thanks for the honest review.

I liked your analysis that Abigail and Haatim had to fight real demons so they could face their own demons in life. I am Catholic and I believe in spiritual warfare so I believe that there are real demons. I will likewise root for anyone fighting them.

I already have the book on my want-to-read list. I hope I will be able to read it real soon.
