Farmer Beau’s farm is a children’s book written by Kathleen Geiger.

While working on his farm, Farmer Beau notices six kittens near his garage. Farmer Beau and his wife Bamma decide to feed the kittens and take care of them. However, five of the six kittens grow up and leave the farm. Relieved that the last one decided to stay with them, they build a small house for her and name her “Kailey”. The rest of the book describes how Kailey befriends a bunny (Samantha bunny or Sammy) and how both Kailey and Sammy react when they become aware of a Giraffe’s arrival on the farm.

The book talks about friendship, the importance of being kind and the need to understand and accept differences. It is a sweet story, which will engage children and teach them many important lessons. The plot is unique and has a little element of suspense in it, which, according to me, children will enjoy. I liked how the main character, Kailey, is not perfect – she makes mistakes but takes action to correct them.

However I have a few issues with the book. I have read books with children and have noticed that they prefer books with more illustrations and less text. If they are reading it themselves, they prefer images through which they can understand (or at least guess) the storyline. To be honest, the amount of text in this book surprised me. In the kindle edition that I received, there were instances where there were 4-5 pages of text, followed by one image. Further, while the images could help in holding a child’s attention, they did not, by themselves, explain the storyline.

Further, the author has used some complicated words such as “tinkering”, “proclaimed”, ”flickered” and “scampered”, which would be difficult for children to understand. Apart from a few complicated words, the text is easy to understand. I found no grammatical, editing or formatting errors in the book. The book follows a good pace and is of an appropriate length. The illustrations in the book are colorful, simple and eye catching. I liked the illustrations and would have definitely liked to see more of them in the book.

Finally, while reading the book, I had a few questions which have been left unanswered. For example, why did the five kittens leave if they were being fed and taken care of? If that is the nature of kittens in general, the sixth kitten should have left as well. However, this is a very small part of the plot and hence, this issue is minor.

Overall, I thought that the book was unique, interesting and had some important lessons. The illustrations caught my attention and kept me interested in the book. Due to the large amount of text and the presence of a few complicated words, I would rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book for children above the age of five, since they would be patient enough to read the entire book and would understand the message.
