It's certainly a challenging arthouse novel. I'm afraid I, being a mom, wouldn't manage reading it.
Anyway thanks for detailed review!

Thank you for being so specific about the book's faults! I am still quite interested in reading it so it's good to be prepared for the stripped down writing style and to pay attention to the flashback scenes.

Having lived through both my child's murder & the Summer of Love, there's certainly a lot I can relate to in this book...but it may be a little too much for me. I appreciated the in-depth review however...great job!

I guess that San Francisco ultimately emerges as the City of Redemption for Liz, following the unsavory and often self afflicted experiences in Glasgow, although the unfolding events around her do not support the much anticipated redemptive behavioral tendency as the culture of recklessness and irresponsibility migrate with her. Does Ahern "mischievously" invent a character, resilient and consistent in character flaws? We can reach conclusion that setting in isolation does not always translate into moral or social transmutation. The review can be described as a successful attempt.

Awesome review on the book! Thanks for including so many details. The cover of this book drew my attention and the plot sounds like it has a little bit of everything. I look forward to reading this well-plotted novel. :)

Thank you for this fantastic review of City of Redemption! The novel sounds like a heart-twisting explosion of events, and Liz sounds a like me... had kids young, very naïve, rebellious tendencies, etc. I cannot fathom ever losing a child and it is, quite honestly, my biggest fear, so my heart aches and breaks for Liz. I am hesitant yet excited to begin reading the adventure she is on and happy music is woven into the story as music is also a huge part of my life. :)

This sounds like a book that I would thoroughly enjoy reading. I agree that this book reminds me of any Alfred Hitchcock film which pleases me. I think that the time period is a perfect setting for a book such as this and adds a layer of depth to the story.

As a mother to an eight year old son myself, I'm not sure I will be able to take reading this without falling apart, but your enjoyment of the review has convinced me to give it a go!

I'm not really "in" to the sixties so I usually shy away from books set in that era. However, the story of this book intrigues me and I just may have to give it a read. I enjoyed reading your insights on the book. Thanks!

Thanks for the detailed review. I am intrigued by the tangled life of Liz Mackay. This story is compelling. I can't imagine how Liz played her life as she tries to fix everything.
