Raven’s Peak- World on fire is a work of fiction by Lincoln Cole. The concept might remind you of some movie flicks or TV series. There is an organization which is fighting against the supernatural. It sends the demons who try to control our world back to hell and that too while keeping the existence of both hidden. We have known stories like this but instead of aliens or ghosts, there are demons here. But unlike those, this story is not impassive. It has passion, philosophical aspects and conveys the power of prayers that keeps one strong enough to fight the evils. The author begun the novel with a line by Tennessee williams "If I got rid of my demons, I'd lose my angels." which allured me to unveil what this novel has to offer.

The story begins with Haatim, who comes to Arizona, where he did his graduation in Theology, to stay away from his family in India because of the bitterness he developed for his father. He unfortunately gets into a trouble and then gets acquainted with Abigail. She is a soldier of the council that fights demons and has been breaking the bones of their organization, The ninth circle, since a long time. She has been looking for some answers that could explain the death of her foster father cum mentor, Arthur. He lost his life while saving her from a demon who once possessed her. She disobeys the council and many a times breaks the rules which she should be abided by, in her venture to know the truth. When she discovers that the ninth circle is after Haatim, his safety becomes her responsibility. That is why she had to keep him close and let him accompany her during her assignment at Raven’s Peak. It is a small town and has camping spot as its main tourist attraction. Certain supernatural incidences had been reported there. So, Abigail was asked to look over it. There, they first discover the murders of some college students and then an infection which slowly captures the entire town like an epidemic. They together search out the demon behind it and fight against it.

The character of Abigail is very impressive. She is a rebel, a passionate fighter, a high-witted young girl and a practical person. She is never so easily driven by the emotions. And never cares about rules and regulation, when it comes to getting her work done. Haatim is a confused person. He is unsure about the existence of God but sees Abigail fighting demons which he never knew before meeting her, are existing for real. What all keeps happening around him gets too much for him to take. Eventually, he not only develops respect for Abigail but also felt indebted to her for saving his life many a times during their time together. The contrast between these two main characters and still working as a team is quite absorbing.

This novel also conveys the idea that no matter which religion one belongs, if one has faith in God, he or she can possess a power which is far superior than any supernatural evil. Those who love reading books that offer adventure should definitely give it a try. I like that the story keeps moving in a high pace from one scene to another. There are plenty of well-described fight scenes between human(Abigail) and the demon that maintain the momentum of excitement while reading. The plot will keep the reader hooked without losing the track. It is full of movement and energy. Language is rich as well as comprehensible due to its descriptive nature.

I am giving this book 3 out of 4 stars. I am keeping one star because many things were left unanswered. I understand that it is a series, so many thing will get unfolded in Book II. Still, not just one or two but many things were not explained leaving the readers curious at the end. But, I will eagerly wait for the next book to get my answers.

Hi Neelam,
Very good review. I also admire Abigail. I think that it is the best character in the story.

Nice review Neelam! The demons and the supernatural powers. This is going to be an interesting novel. Are you from India. I saw your name and thought to ask.
What is the most special thing I did today- I was MYSELF. Happy and in love and unapologetically myself.
