The 11:05 Murders by Brian O’Hare is the 2nd book in the Inspector Sheehan Mysteries series. He has written a well put together murder mystery and psychological thriller with various plot lines intertwined to keep one guessing. Thugs, lawyers, and police mixed with murder, checkered pasts and a little romance. A combination that is timeless, because it works.
The book introduces a strong young female character, Denise Stewart, in the first few chapters. She was a uniformed police officer at an Irish police station which was corrupt and fraught with discrimination. Her transfer to a new police station and promotion finds her in an environment that is the complete opposite of her former workplace. Detective Stewart meets a host of new colleagues that are likable and relatable, reminiscent of classic TV shows Hill Street Blues and Law and Order.
A series of brutal and salacious murders are committed at 11:05 PM. The answers as to who and why lead the investigative team through twists and turns. The suspects are many and the reasons are varied but they are all believable. Police procedures are followed by thoroughly investigating every lead. The narrative has a good flow and is descriptive without over embellishing. All these elements are presented in a variety of settings through pubs, universities, mansions, as well as the police station so even the execution of this complex tale provides another level of interest by executing the story line across many social settings.
Of course a good book always seems to have a love interest. A romantic triangle emerges between Denise Stewart, a fellow detective Tom Allen and the prosecutor Robert Turner which causes tension throughout the chapters. A stream of diverse suspects in the murders are uncovered and eliminated. The ending is fast paced. What more can you ask for in a good mystery?
This book was a joy to read with never a dull moment. I enjoyed the complex investigation and the characters had a hometown feel. These characters are people I would like to get to know better. If you are an avid mystery fan or just an occasional sleuth, this will probably be a welcomed addition to your bookshelf.
I’m giving The 11:05 Murders a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I have put this author on my must read list and this is a book I would recommend for anyone who enjoys a well constructed, intriguing mystery. I look forward to reading more books in the series.
