According to Sheila Kennedy, an Author and Professor at School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Director, Indiana University Center for Civic Literacy, “This book should be subtitled Fact-checking the snake-oil salesmen”. I completely agree. People get overwhelmed with the list of TO DO pieces of advice concerning healthy lifestyle, on the Internet. Desperate people are likely to trust any source of information if it is convincing enough. Marketeers misuse this fact, trying to promote their products and sell them to credulous people.

The book Health-Tips-Myths-and-Tricks by Morton E. Tavel, MD is very well organized. It begins with a few reviews followed by a Table of Contents, the Introduction, 62 chapters and finally, some facts About the Author. There’s also a long list of references, which means that the author has used various published scientific researches in stating certain facts. In addition to this, the author is now retired, but was a reputed physician and a Clinical Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine. All in all, the book seems to be a reliable source of information on healthy lifestyle.

As the title of the book suggests, it is divided into three parts:
1) Tips (32 chapters) - health and wellness pieces of advice which should be incorporated into one’s lifestyle;
2) Myths (20 chapters) - common misconceptions about our well-being; and
3) Tricks (10 chapters) - warning people not to waste money on dangerous products.

Furthermore, each chapter has a pretty clear structure, starting with the facts and the description of the current situation, people’s habits and the general public opinion on health benefits of certain products. Almost every chapter ends with a Conclusion or a Bottom Line, offering information on either healthy alternatives or the ways how to avoid various scams of vendors.Since this is not a novel or a story, but informative reading material, such a clear structure enables a reader to choose a chapter or a part of it which is of special interest to them.

Having in mind vulnerability of sick people, who usually tend to trust anyone claiming they can help them, this book is a valuable source of information, since it offers facts based on scientific research. I would recommend it not only to the people who have a health problem, but also to anyone willing to live a healthy lifestyle and prevent certain health issues. Apart from having a very useful content, the book could represent a kind of a reference book or a guide, due to its form. Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
