THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO ZOMBIES by Dave Robertson is a non-fiction book based on a fictional idea. From the beginning of the idea in 1912, the author takes the reader through the evolution of zombies in books, movies, video games, and events specifically for zombie devotees. The original characteristics of zombies have changed through the years from being passive until ordered to attack to the current blood and guts movies of today. There are voodoo zombies, Nazi zombies, brain craving zombies, each with their own very specific characteristics.
Chapters in the book include zombie movies through the years, zombie brain anatomy, how one becomes a zombie, how to fight and kill them, what to fight them with, memorable zombies and their make-up artists, zombie music, zombie events, social commentary, and the zombie apocalypse. Anyone wanting to know everything there is to know about zombies should read this book.
Dave Robertson is the ultimate zombie fan, having accumulated and presented all the information about this genre in one well-written book. Sometimes I wondered if he was serious, sarcastic, or just has a good sense of humor. It seems like all of the above are true.
I am not a zombie fan. I watched Night of the Living Dead in 1968 and never watched another one, but I found this book fascinating to read. Particularly interesting is how the whole idea started and how the characteristics have changed over the years as movies progressed and make-up techniques got better. Mr. Robertson describes what weapons to use on the various types of zombies and gives actual links to actual places where one can get these weapons. As I was reading, I kept thinking that these ideas seem so ludicrous that he must be kidding, but he describes it so seriously and the links work.
THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO ZOMBIES is an easy read and appropriate for people over 12 years old. Some of the descriptions get fairly bloody and gory. However, many parts are thought provoking. One social commentary point the author makes is that “voodoo” zombies are a metaphor for slavery. Another point is that movie makers use empty shopping malls for their background as a metaphor for current rampant consumerism.
I rate this 4 out of 4 stars. The book is well-written and well-edited. The author makes the statement that zombies are: “Adaptable, approachable, relatable creatures that come with their own apocalypse. As far as monsters go, what’s not to like about zombies?” Even if you don’t like the idea of zombies, this book is a fun read.
