The scene sets with a stormy night and an unexpected visitor at the door. Tom is surprised by the presence of his ex-wife, Ruth, and a supposed granddaughter he never knew existed. Tom’s plans of rediscovering his grandfather’s grave deep in the Olympic Peninsula are immediately disrupted by the feisty, spirited 13 year old girl, Sarah. Tom feels he should stay home from his pilgrimage into the Peninsula with his friend William and William’s also feisty daughter, Myra. William convinces Tom to take Sarah along and the adventure begins. The characters are plunged into an ill-fated excursion with many twists and surprising turns of fate and mystery. Each person is required to reach into discomfort and grow in ways they don’t expect while accepting viewpoints they never thought could mesh with their own.
Strong Heart, by Charlie Sheldon, demonstrates an excellent development of human traits that few acknowledge in themselves. Through interaction and dialogue, the characters are able to release previous opinions they thought were carved in stone and, eventually, accept the truthfulness of an impossible situation that ties all of their individual theories together. The result is a unification and set resolve to open up to the realness of the seemingly unreal situation.
Charlie Sheldon has completed a lot of research to back up his book. As a writer, he can very competently tell the story effectively using legend, archaeology, scientific theory, and his own experience. I even looked up some of the facts myself. Mr. Sheldon has been very effective at blending all these aspects in a very creative new legend of his own.
There was some gore in the book but I feel it was only what would have been a factual portrayal of the situation. There is some strong language occasionally but I feel the author attempted to keep it mild, overall. Strong Heart was definitely a book that was worth the read. The author has a sort of jolting way of writing that held my attention throughout the book and the characters were easy to identify with. The conversations and relationship situations were realistic and the physical descriptions were fabulous. I felt as if I was looking at and feeling the environment.
I did feel the end was a little short and did not tie up all the loose ends, such as the continuation of the relationships in the book. I also felt like the writing did not flow smoothly in some areas. So I am rating Strong Heart, by Charlie Sheldon with 3 out of 4 stars. I only found 3 typos in the book. Overall, a good read.
