The Elf Brief by Jordan David is a remarkable take on Santa and the elves that work for him. The current Santa Christo is set to retire, and a new Santa needs to be chosen. Enter Noel Night, a fairly young elf, who is enlisted by Santa as his assistant in this task.

Noel is befuddled as to exactly what he is supposed to do as an assistant. Nobody can tell him anything, so he has to learn as he goes. Along the way we are introduced to department heads with names like White Christmas and Gingerbread Cookie. What follows is a romp through Santa’s land and the elves who inhabit it.

Jordan David writes a story of how a business operates with all the problems found in those businesses. The difference is that the author does it at the North Pole and uses elves instead of humans as the characters. The running of Santa’s business is described in delightful detail. Jordan David uses a vivid imagination to explain why and how things occur at the North Pole; how long a Santa is a Santa, how he can deliver presents all over the world in one night, where do elves come from, how the Rudolph story began, and so much more.

I rate this 3 out of 4 stars, but only because there are numerous grammatical errors. It is obvious the author has used spell check, but also obvious that a human was not used to correct the spelling and grammar mistakes. For example, two times “Literary!” and “Literarily!” were used when “Literally” was the word meant to be used. None the less needs hyphens, “What you say?” is missing “do,” and some commas are missing as in “Well we try to estimate.”

However, even with these mistakes, the story is a delight to read and I encourage everyone of all ages to do so. It is bubbling with excitement, mystery, drama, and comedy. It is amazing to see how the author creates a fascinating story using the North Pole and Santa as the backdrop. My only complaint is that the author did not have someone copy-edit it before publishing the book.

The Elf Brief’s main character, Noel, has a job that is like one I had; no job description, make it up as you go. It is delightful, and brings back fond memories, to watch him as he figures it all out. This book is charming and extremely interesting, and I can’t wait to read the next one in the series.

The more I've read of the series, the more impressed I am with the author. He does a great job telling a tale. Nice review.
