Jody Miller’s From Drift to Shift is a nonfictional collection of difficult life experiences, heart-wrenching stories of people who have overcome incredible difficulties to become prominent entrepreneurs, equally successful in business as in life. In a motivating, uplifting voice, this work is designed to provoke everyone to think about their own lives and to help find ways to improve it.

Intentional transformations are probably a rarity. More commonly, they are triggered by a sudden, traumatic event that leaves us stripped from essential tools or unable to rely on our familiar habits; therefore, some transformations may not always be a pleasant experience. However, Miller’s encouragement for change is focused on self-reflection, set goals to improve, and a long-term practice to maintain happiness. Jody Miller starts with her own belief that making a shift (i.e. a change) is inevitable to achieve balance, meaning, and happiness in our lives (part two, page 93). Her premise is that most of us need a change and can make a ‘shift’ to achieve better lives.

How many people do you know, who are truly happy with their lives? Definitely a few, stroked by a beam of magic potion containing good luck, sufficient necessities, and a bright mind. Most of us, however, plow through the days strained between opposing needs and requirements. Jody Miller’s From Drift to Shift should help to carry out various life-changing transitions. The stories of tragedy turned wealth, incapacitating accidents and destructive disease turned into long-term success, happiness, and satisfaction that are told by interviewing Miller’s friends. Why wouldn’t a young waitress achieve her dream of owning a bakery herself? Maybe, because we are thought to look at the picture as if it’s not our own life; standing in a museum to admire a painting on a wall is not the same as to dare to stroke the colors with our own brushes. Miller’s possess a challenge to all her readers: make your move to grab your own happiness, if you dare.

Jody Miller’s book is a readable TED-talk, a motivational and inspirational journey. Through the book, she takes her readers gently by a hand, and helps us cross the uncertain path toward a better understanding of why we need a change, how could we accomplish such a life-changing shift, and how do we keep this achievement for the rest of our lives. Every chapter serves as an educational pointer and ends with a takeaway list of most important bullet points to help you through your own journey. At the very end, we are introduced to the beautiful Hindu religion and philosophy, aiming to help self-discovery of an archetype as a crucial starting point in a personal passage to sustaining happiness. In these terms, achieving happiness does not necessarily require more material goods, but rather a better understanding what can one do that is best for ourselves and those that surround us.

Undoubtedly, From Drift to Shift is an inspiring and an educational work. As a collection of stories driven from the interviews by the author, Miller draws an analysis of how these successful people distinguish themselves in a competitive world of business. Some of them came from less fortunate and discriminating circumstances but have succeeded to shift their path and keep the momentum of success simply by following their passions for helping others. Even though highly admirable, these stories will in my opinion appeal only a narrow set of readers who are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to tackle a change in their life. From Drift to Shift can be read as a good advice, for adolescents or people in their early decades in the work force. Due to a somewhat misplaced set of journalistic encounters offered as the author’s advice, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I highly recommend this read for anyone who strives to balance personal happiness with a busy work life.
