Have you ever wished to know if a good breakfast is truly healthy? Did an episode of heartburn ever propel you to know more about the condition? Have you ever wondered about the health benefits of fortified food? If you have ever sought scientifically accurate answers presented in easy-to-understand layman terms to any of the above questions, then, you must definitely read the book Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks by Dr. Morton.E.Tavel. This book is a guide where Dr.Tavel discusses and provides practical advice about several health-related elements of daily living covering common health issues and busting many health myths.

The book is a pleasure to read. It is very well-written and makes for an engrossing read. I never thought reading about shellfish poisoning or cranberries or genetically modified foods could be so interesting. The writing style captivated me right from the start. The book is written in a conversational tone, light and friendly, which calms your nerves as you proceed to learn about a wealth of important health facts.

Every topic discussed in Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is presented with an informative introduction providing readers with adequate background knowledge about the subject. Moreover, every complex medical detail and terminology is well explained in layman terms. The facts and practical advice discussed in the book are evidenced with accurate scientific data. Details of the sources of the scientific data is also listed for readers benefits. Thus, any reader can rest assured that the information received from the book is safe, accurate, and useful.

A salient element of the great writing that I immensely admired is the use of humour in every chapter to keep the tone light and readers entertained. The humour seen in Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is quite witty and is sure to make readers smile. Besides humour, the book scores points as it discusses both sides of every topic. Dr.Tavel, in his honest and engaging writing style, has discussed both, the good and the bad, the pros and the cons about every food, medication, illness, and myth discussed in the book.

Despite of being a great read, I did find two drawbacks in the book. First, as I noticed from the first chapter, the book is primarily intended for an American audience. This became increasingly clear as I read through the chapters and came across topics concerning health benefits of foodstuffs that are staple of American citizens, but, may not be easily available in other countries. Furthermore, the myths discussed in the book are the ones that are widespread in the United States, however, may or may not be known elsewhere in the world. It also came to my attention that most of the organizations mentioned in the book are located in the United States. Secondly, in some of the chapters, the scientific data about foods, drugs etc, though easy-to-understand, is extensive and may seem repetitive; this may slightly lower the readers’ interest.

All in all, Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is an informative book to read with useful practical guidance about healthy living. I would rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. I believe, this book will not only, enlighten readers about healthy living, but also, would kindle their desire to practice a healthy lifestyle. It is a must-read for all health enthusiasts.

Thanks for your review! I keep debating whether or not I want to read this book. I enjoy watching documentaries on what food is healthy or overly processed, etc., but I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy reading it in a book. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Thanks Christina! I think, you may give this book a try. Compared to health documentaries/TV programs, this book might seem a tad dull. But, nonetheless, I feel it is a good and insightful book.
