"Escape" by Belle Ami was a fantastic book full of romance and trying to escape from a challenging situation. Layla is a Harvard doctoral student and is traveling to Dubai with her boyfriend, Zamir for a vacation. During their vacation, the unimaginable happens and Layla is wrapped up in an abduction. This event separates Layla from Zamir, who finds safety, and lands her in prison in Tehran. Tehran is a constant threat to Layla’s life and she finds herself in the company of a merciless guard. Cyrus is an Indian spy who is sent to rescue Layla at the request of her father, who has built a relationship with the Israeli prime minister. Cyrus’ job is to get Layla to safety or to kill her, which was a delightful twist to the seemingly superhero that had come to save the day. Layla is already weary to trust anyone since she had just been through a horribly traumatic experience. Layla is trying to figure Cyrus out as well as why she feels an attraction for him. They battle to escape Iran, which is a difficult task, all while trying to figure each other out.
I loved how the author kept this story going from one terrifying obstacle to overcome to the next. I found myself so wrapped up in the book that hours would pass before I would put it down to take a break. It kept me on my toes with each twist and turn that Layla and Cyrus ran into. I enjoyed how different Cyrus and Layla were and how it was a mystery as to how each of them would respond to the other and get along while trying to hold onto their lives. The emotional bond between Layla and Cyrus made for a great read as well through all the chaos happening around them.
I enjoyed Layla’s character the most. She was strong and I always like it when there is a strong female within the book. I love the fact that she has the “fiery red hair” that matches her feisty side. Cyrus was also enjoyable and had a dark side to him that was revealed throughout the book that helped me to understand more about him.
The book was easy to understand and flowed nicely. All the characters fit into the story perfectly and the book had a nice pace to it. I loved the book from start to finish and did not find any moments of the book that I would say I did not like. I will say that there are some extremely mature scenes that are quite detailed. It fit into the story and did not make me dislike anything about it, but I would recommend a mature audience read this book as well as anyone who enjoys thrillers and romance.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I did not find any grammatical errors throughout the book and I loved every aspect of the book. I loved the pace, the characters, and the journey I traveled down while reading it. This was a quick read and a book I could not put down easily. I would read this again happily and be just as engrossed in the novel as if I was reading it for the first time again. I loved the cover as well. I felt that after reading the book it was a perfect match for what the book was about. The poetic descriptions were my absolute favorite part of the book and had me wanting more every time. All in all, this was a wonderful book and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
