Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. It's a short (around 150 pages) but sweet novella about a loner who befriends a new girl at school, who teaches him to express himself and open up his imagination.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey. It's about a rebellious social outcast who is institutionalized to be evaluated for mental illness, where he finds that the institution is more like an oppressive government led by a cruel tyrant of a nurse. He bonds with his fellow patients and challenges the nurse's control over their lives and individuality.

The Warriors by Sol Yurik. This one's about a youth gang in New York City who attends a gang meeting in the Bronx, and has to try to make it back to Coney Island in one piece when the head of the meeting is gunned down.

And finally, American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. It's about Patrick Bateman, a successful investment banker in 1980s-era Wall Street, who also happens to be a vicious serial killer. The novel follows Bateman as he struggles to hide his dark personal life from his professional image, and is a great satire of American materialism in the '80s.
