Most of us know the concepts of how to have a successful "journey." However, it's not bad to have some reminders from time to time. This book seems to be so, a good reminder of how to have a spiritual journey.

From your review, I get the understanding that Dancing with Sophia is more of a veiled instruction for ethical and moral values. And the very name Sophia is a giveaway, denoting wisdom in Greek. So, the writer has chosen this for that purpose. Dancing with Sophia, then, has to be taken metaphorically in this context.

I agree with your comment about the novel containing veiled instruction and thus the "dancing" is a metaphor. Indeed, I was drawn to the book's title because I have always been interested in Sophia as the Greek goddess of wisdom As an astrologer, I think the archetypal energies of the gods and goddesses of various cultures have a lot to teach us about ourselves. Thanks! The author doesn't say where Baingana is located. Perhaps this is because he was focused on the spiritual nature of the character's journey and didn't want to mix in "real world" elements? He assigns character names based on European mythic characters (e.g. Sophia is the Greek goddess of wisdom). I seem to recall that the author may be from Portugal? You get some sense of a European setting but it doesn't dominate the narrative.

A young man embarking on a journey and getting more than he bargained for? Sounds quite the journey. Books about spiritual transformation and self-discovery aren't really my cup of tea, but I am glad you enjoyed the book despite its faults. Nice review!
