Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is an exciting novel filled with history, in depth relationships, and an adventure to the magnificent Olympic mountains. During a backpacking trip to the Olympic National Park, Tom Olsen unexpectedly meets Sarah, his strong headed granddaughter he didn’t even know existed. Tom’s original intent was to tend to the gravesite of his grandfather and, unable to cancel his trip, reluctantly decides to bring Sarah along.
The story delves into their hiking trip, and one day, Sarah and Tom getting a fight, with Sarah walking away in the end and disappearing. On the eighth day, there is a lightning storm and in the midst of it, Sarah reappears with an unbelievable story.
I have to be honest, I didn’t like the narration at first. Personally, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the voice—it was a little flat at times. As the story picked up however, each character began to have their own, distinct narration. It starts of slow, which can cause readers to lose interest, but it begins to pick up later. The writing for the most part is easy to follow.
Sheldon does a fantastic job in blending his story and characters into the world. The description of the Olympic Peninsula is clear, and you can see the beauty of the place the characters travel into. There is also the wonderful culture and myths explored in the book. I felt like the book was very exciting and informative to read; it was very interesting to read about the different relationships that existed between people in this story. I like reading books that focuses a lot on the development of the characters and how they interact with one and other, and this book definitely did it for me.
Sheldon also delves into subjects the reader may not know much about (such as anthropology or genetics), but he delves into it in a way where the reader can enjoy the story without being confused.
This book is also well edited with no grammatical mistakes that I know of. The story is well polished and easy to read.
I give Strong Heart a 4 out of 4 stars. The characters and story is easy and intriguing to follow. I recommend this book to people who enjoy reading about familial relationships and finding personal identity. I really enjoyed the journey this book gives you; there is not only an amazing depiction of the scenery, but also the tale it tells about family, tradition, and identity.

I agree with your comments about the description of the Olympic Peninsula. Makes me want to take a vacation out there just to see it. Glad you enjoyed the book and gave it such a high rating.
