I enjoyed reading your reply! Thank you for your honesty! I sometimes get in a "historical" reading mood and this book sounds like just the perfect treat for that! I look forward to my hot cup of tea while I read the story of the immigrants as they embark on their journey. After reading the sample, I can tell that the author uses great detail in her writing so the reader can become more involved with the characters. I look forward to reading this book!

I appreciate your honesty in the review. I was surprised to read that part in the review where she says “You practically raped me.” Due to the review, I will most likely NOT be checking out this book.

Though this story about the descendants of three immigrant families who try to achieve the American dream sounds like a unique premise, I don't think it's for me. I do like how the author includes diversity and culture, which gives the book a sense of realism. Too bad about the plot flow being off and it was a struggle to remember who is who. I think the amount of characters would also throw me off. Though I'm glad that you were able to enjoy the writing style and you found this to eye-opening regardless of its issues. Thank you for sharing!

That's a fascinating cast of characters, reflecting America's diversity in a way that spans generations. I agree that the suggestion that women want to be raped was unfortunate, however unintentional.
This post was brought to you by the word "specifically".

I agree with your rating because there seems to be issues with the formatting of the story. I am happy there was only one grammatical error. I do not like that rape was used in a positive context and it should never be. I like the various story and characters that are presented in this novel. I love that you can relate to two of the characters in their struggle between being Western and being Asian.

Thank you for the insightful review! I'm interested - you gave the book 2 stars, was it the plot flow and confusion about the characters that took it down from 4 stars, or was there something else too?

I agree with the reviewer that at some point in the story it is difficult to match the characters to what period. This is expected especially in historical fictions. As much as this is confusing, for me, it doesn't spoil my enjoyment of a story. I'm still reading it and enjoying it as well. Great review!

I am really into stories about immigrants expecially in our current political climate. It is so important to know these stories!

It kind of makes me sad that this book deals with an important issue and then goes on to invalidate another important issue. The whole thing about the sex scene is jarring and painful, and I haven’t even read the book yet.

I think this book sounds like a cool opportunity to learn more about different cultures. It's cool that it doesn't focus on just one, but three. I can understand how that could be confusing to a reader though.

Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful review. This review, together with the free preview on Amazon, has convinced me that I should read the book. I am always looking for good historical novels, because when I read them I'm indulging myself and learning history at the same time. But there are enormous numbers of books classified as historical fiction, and the good ones can be lost, buried under piles of mediocrity. I'm glad you brought "American River: Tributaries" to my attention.

The story sounds great according to the reviewer at first. Immigrants families that made America their home. Although the mention of the sex scene and that it portrayed in a positive light is damming.

Thanks for the interesting review. The blurb piqued my interest but knowing that the author makes jumps and that there are spots that are hard to follow make me hesitant to read. I enjoy historical fiction novels, but now I'm on the fence about this book.

Immigration stories from people that live in foreign countries have always been something that I look forward to as some of the most eye opening experiences one could ever hear of. I have traveled for years as well and I know what it means to struggle in identifying things that were once so simple to you and yet everything is different in the country you're in now. Tough topic to tackle. The review hit the nail in the head.
