Books like these make me feel better knowing that I read books from different genres. I have some ideas of religious concept, court proceedings, and effects of radiations so I could probably get past the confusion. The twists in the story is another thing and something I look forward to. Thank you for your review!

Well written review. The writer mentioned a "controversial religious concept," this made me intrigued. The narration issue of jumping back and forth is a concern as I can find this confusing.

I understand your point about the narration alternating between the past and the present. I'm glad that you liked the book overall. Thanks for the review.

I love psychological thrillers and always challenge myself to guess the ending before all is revealed! Looking forward to reading this one all the way through.

On the surface this seemed like it was going to be just some boring romantic drama. Now I'm not so sure. After a life is cut short, it seems to pick up again with a young girl giving her valedictorian speech on reincarnation as she constantly dreams of the death of an unknown woman and knows things she couldn't possibly know about a place she has never been. I'm not sure what the death of a cheating man or the sale of his condo by his son has to do with anything just yet, but I am eager to find out. The switching back and forth between past and present seems a little daunting, but if done well I will give it a chance.

I don't think I'll buy the book, but I would potentially select it as a review novel. I'm trying to get better about the amount of books I buy. From the sample, the book appears to be well edited. I like the description of Mike and Susan's getting to know each other before going on an actual date, I thought it was a nice touch, although the dialogue seems a little odd. I didn't like that Susan recited her whole schedule for Mike instantly. The review did add to me wanting to read this book, as it told me it was a crime novel rather than a romance like I expected from the cover.

I absolutely want to and will read this book. It is so good so far and I'm intrigued to see where this story will go. The characters are compelling and each chapter leaves me wanting more. It's got mystery and a past life scenario. I have to know how this story ends.

Oh wow, sure doesn’t seem like an easy breezy read! Instead it sounds like something that you have to dedicate time to rather than just picking it up. Wouldn’t want to get sucked into the intense story 10 minutes before work!

Might just be a personal thing, but there was way too much biographical detail about all the characters in the excerpt I read. I want to get to know the characters, but I prefer it when the information comes out through their actions rather than in a big chunk of exposition.

After reading the sample of this book, the author did an amazing job of piquing my interest. I’m curious as to whether Mike’s suspicions about the motive for the murder is correct and also how everyone’s story is related to the solving of the murder. The plot seems very very intriguing. Good job with the review!

You're review is very in depth but, not any spoilers. I'm not usually a fan of violent mystery, with that being said your review is intriguing and draws me to read it. I definitely wouldn't have come to the conclusion from the title that this book was a mystery novel.

Switching the story between the past and the present sounds captivating. This technique helps not only to build suspense in the readers but also add to the understanding of the story. The controversial religious concept turns me a little but off, though. Anyways, thanks for this great review!

A life before by Julien Ayotte

I was intrigued at the part of Samantha and was looking forward to see how her dreams connect to the death, or indeed and how it might help resolve the murder considering there was witness to it reported earlier.
