Thinking about giving writing a try...

Hi guys,

I have been looking for a new hobby recently and i thought i would maybe take up story writing, maybe starting easy with short stories and stuff like that,

I am quite fond of horror stories and soldier stories, so if i decide to take up writing these are my prefered areas,

As a beginner i am looking for some advice on how to go about writing a short story if anyone could help me that would be great,

well what i do is, think of the main events that you think will be cool/scary. try to visualize them, this way you'll have a better sense when you write it. find ways to connect those main events. At the same time you do this, try to use other books/movies as examples and think "How can I make this better/different?"

Ps. I'm also working on a horror movie/screenplay.

Ive been thinking of writing something, nothing for publication I dont have the expertise for that but just for my own enjoyment and maybe for my kids to read after Im dead and gone. Probably nothing very long just whatever pops into my head. When I was in high school I wrote a couple of horror stories, one was about a swamp monster and I dont remember the other one something about a mad doctor I think. They wernt very good, I dont have the talent for putting words together so they sound halfway intelligent but it was fun to write them. I didnt want anyone to see them, I was afraid they would think I was weird. I left them on my bed one time and my mom found them and read them with my dad and they said they were good and that I should be a writer. That never happened, but I might give it another shot. I think it would be fun just for my own enjoyment. If anyone out there can give me any tips it would be much appreciated.
