Hey, this is a nice review! I liked how nonfiction books read not like nonfiction books and since you claimed it flows like an adventure story instead--I think I wanna pick this title up. It is quite fascinating to know how he maneuvered his relationship with the sea from such a young age.

As a South African, I LOVE this book, so any misgivings expressed in this review were really unnecessary, and I'm just SO glad that you found this out! We tend to think of fishermen as being unlettered manual workers, but this goes to show that they are NOT all like that (and probably most of them are not). I loved the author's approach to his Christian upbringing too - though his faith clearly means a great deal to him, he most definitely does not thump you over the head with it. LOVE this memoir, and I intend to tell our local newspaper, the Weslander, about it.

"The call of the sea..."

Thank you for the thoughtful review. The call of the sea can indeed be a powerful thing. From our first tentative steps on the beach toward the ocean, to the tentative first steps aboard a boat, to that moment, our heart hammering away in out threat, when we feel the water rush up to greet us as we tumble backward off the side of the boat for the first time. Thalassophobics aside from that first moment we encounter that humbling, unending expanse of water, we are drawn to it again and again. I look forward to exploring Jack's relationship with the the sea.

My genre choices vary from time to time. Non-fiction and adventure are not part of my typical realm. Although the review makes the book seem like a good read, it's not in my wheelhouse right now.
The author seems very talented and the writing looks good.

Thanks for the review. You do make this book to seem like a very worth while book. I don't think it perks my interest though.

This was a great review! For some reason I didn’t see that this one was nonfiction until reading your review. I have been meaning to read more nonfiction recently! I’ve also been meaning to go fishing, oops.

Very well said. :techie-reference: Thank you for your review. From the title itself it is obvious that everything is about the sea and the fisherman. Sounds good. I really appreciate the beauty of under water world.

Sounds like Jack has have an adventurous life at sea and the fishing business. I did not even know there was such thing as sea diamond mining. Thanks for the review!

I'm so glad that this wasn't as dry as you thought it would be (and I love your metaphor.) A man's relationship with the sea does sound intriguing. I associate your genuine and informative review. I'll defintely have to try this one with such a high rating from you! Thanks.

A "Jack of all trades" memoir focusing on the author's success in starting his own fishing business and his relationship with the sea sounds like an interesting novel. Can't believe the ongoing relationship with the sea started at the age of six and still continues on, even through his life's ups and downs! I'm glad that you found this memoir exciting like an adventure story. This isn't for me as I don't enjoy fishing or sports, but it's great to hear that you enjoyed this one! Thank you for the great review!
