Relationships, money, sex and friendship makes up for a good combination. At least it did for me in Heartaches 2-bad boy vibes by H.M. Irwing, a romance genre book. Being the second part of the Heartache- bad boy vibes series, it picks up from where the first part ends. It’s the story of Anna and Rafe, two love birds in a rocky relationship crowded by a dark past and a common enemy (the Prestons). The people around them, including family, do not make their lives any easier but they don’t let this get in the way.

H.M. Irwing employs enough suspense to keep the reader weaved in. every time Ana and Rafe seem to enjoy their love for each other, something always seem to cut short their happiness. Pat, though Anna’s friend and is gay, proves a threat to Rafe. Rafe is jealous of the kind of closeness these two have and shares it with Anna. Despite the re assurance from both Anna and Pat that nothing is going on between them, Rafe struggles to accept that reality. Even when Anna offers for both Rafe and herself, to accompany Pat to tell his parents of his sexual preferences, Rafe is still unhappy about their shared friendship. But I wouldn’t blame Rafe either because if I was in his shoes, my reaction would be the same or even worse. I found the jealous boyfriend character in Rafe likeable in the sense that it provided the right environment for Anna and him to frequently take time off together and what follows is something I will leave for the reader to find out for themselves.

The theme of trust manifests itself in almost all the characters. It is trust that determines which friendships are broken and it is upon that trust that new friendships are created. The character Suzi, though she enters appearance at almost the tail end of the story, is a unique character. She brings with her a new perspective of life into characters that have been there since the beginning of the story. Having read the first installment of the series, I understood why the writer opts to enter appearance at that section of the second installment. The theme of family or blood relations isn’t as dominant as it was in the first installment.

The sex scenes are, in my view, suitable only for a mature audience. Same sex relationship also finds its way in the story line so care should be exercised in choosing to read this book if a reader isn’t comfortable with it. The language used is one that is very simplistic making it easy to follow through the story line. Anna and Rafe’s aunts are two support characters whose consistency in their personality, I found to be important in shaping Anna and Rafe’s character as the lead characters.

Having stated the above, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. For those that enjoy reading romance genre the Heartaches series should be an interesting pick for you. I would suggest reading the three installments in order to understand the story line.
